Hi not sure what you are saying in your post. If you think 7 is expensive for 15 second produced VO well I would disagree. The vo artists I work with charge much more than that for a dry and then the cost of production goes on top. I suppose it depends on your expectations and the market you are working in. Also budgets are a big consideration. I do a lot of free work here and on other sites to help people out who can't afford to pay and to help enhance their stations. I suppose it depends what you want to get out of this business.

I agree with Mark. That's not a bad price. It all depends on what the client wants. I have generic prices on my site, but often I'm sending a custom invoice to my clients, because they are wanting extras that take more time, therefore more production costs.

This is the age old argument about value for money and you get what you pay for. A Voice Pro may take ten minutes to do a read or a producer may take 30-60 mins for a read and production. What you are getting............

years of experience
pre VO discussion with the customer(paid work)or audition process
purchase of legal music beds
purchase of legal - effects-pads-drones
purchase of legal sound effects
purchase of a computer suitable for vo and production
Suitable mike and mixer
Purchase of legal production programme such as Adobe Audition 3
Payment of copyright fees
Cost of advertising
Purchase of downloading site such as yousendit.com
and many more costs.

Wow 7 for 15 seconds seems very expensive to me.....not. People are prepared to pay higher fees as it is cheaper than legal action for copyright.
As a hobby you can afford to cut corners but when its your livlihood you cannot. Hey just a few thoughts to put things in perspective.I respect your opinion but disagree with it. We are just trying to make a living. I know of no other professions who help out for free on sites like BW and others. See if you can get a solicitor to give you a freebie.!!!!!!!!!!

I have done some freebie work for EMR in the past on another freebie site which in return got me a thankyou.

Right just getting off the soap box.

Just thought it would help if I put cost into context for you, as it is easy to forget what is involved. Hey its a forum we can all express our views.

Hi - not wanting to add fire to the debate here, but thought I would chip in. 7.00 is what I charge for a fully produced sweeper, but I've never completed one in 10 minutes - more like 30 minutes to 60 minutes. Add to that your overheads (expensive mic, audio equipment, software, plug ins, licenced sound effects and backing music, bandwidth charges - remember VOs send out a lot of large files, the inland revenue get a cut if you're honest) and suddenly 7 an hour doesn't sound so expensive.

I've been around radio and production a long time and I can remember in the mid 80s, the going rate for a dry voice over was around 10 to 15 - this is 20 years ago ! So prices have certainly gone down.

Not wanting to stir up the debate here, but just thought I'd give the view from another angle.
