An American rock guitarist has filed a lawsuit against Coldplay, accusing the popular British band of plagiarising one of his songs on their latest hit album, according to court documents published on Thursday.Joe Satriani, known for his instrumental compositions, alleges Coldplay's song "Viva la Vida" had "copied and incorporated substantial original portions" from his own track "If I Could Fly" recorded on an album released in 2004.
Satriani's lawsuit demands damages and "any and all profits" related to the alleged copyright infringement.
A representative for the band was not immediately available for comment.
Coldplay's latest album "Viva la vida," released in June, has topped the charts in Europe and the United States. The recording helped Coldplay win seven nominations for the 2009 Grammy awards.

James! Wash your mouth out! :)

Joe Satriani is a guitar GOD! He taught Kirk Hemmett from Metallica among others.

Im not with any U.S rock music anymore :o
All im saying is that it sounds fair, coldplay has a chance of actually loosing this battle.

Coldplay should lose. They've never been anything more than second rate.
To call them a rock band is beyond belief. Insulting actually.

I'm hardly a guitar fan by any means and I've heard of Joe Satriani.
This is due to the fact that his name appears as a product line of gear (FX pedals/guitars/etc.) in music catalogs

Ouch! I don't see how Coldplay could not lose that one! They didn't even bother changing the key or tempo! (provided that Joe Satriani came up with it first)
I think that the rule is 30s though, and it's slightly under, but since it's chords and melody... we'll see

When the two were overlapped it was uncanny.
Hey, Huey Lewis and The News won against Ray Parker Jr.
Parker ripped off the same elements from Lewis' "I Wanna New Drug" when he put out "Ghostbusters"
