AOL has recently switched SHOUTcast over to a new layout and platform. This month we saw the changes happen including a new taskbar player, new BETA DNAS and a more easier, cleaner design.

But with the previous redesign earlier on in the year, brought back the old classic SHOUTcast (below). Classic SHOUTcast had a darker, more content-filled layout which has been classed as quicker loading and easier to browse. Mixed messages are flowing around the web and the SHOUTcast forums towards the new re-design with some users welcoming the new changes...

I quite like the new look, it's light and clean looking

The main problem is that they only seem to allow you to listen to MP3 based streams with their flash player. In the short time I've been on the site, I haven't been able to tune into a station with my preferred player (Winamp) apart from AAC+ stations.

Either they don't allow it or the link is hidden away somewhere - either way it's not a good thing.

I like to use Winamp because you can minimise it and just sits in the system tray instead of cluttering the taskbar up.

They also no longer link to the station website which is bad for radio stations that want their listeners to interact!

Overall:

Old Shoutcast:

Looks: 5/10
Usability: 8/10
Total: 13/20

New Shoutcast:

Looks: 7/10
Usability: 4/10
Total: 11/20

Unfortunately, a nice modern design doesn't make a website better by itself.

Agree, the old classic one for me was miles better and better for stations also.

Shoutcast home page -> Help -> Settings
Once there, you can set your default player and as long as you don't clear cookies, settings should be remembered from session to session.

Oh yeah, I didn't see that but as I hadn't looked on there for long. I do prefer the functionality of the old one though.
