If this is just a hobby to you and no more then start with a low priced one, see how they pan out. If the server goes down a lot then change to someone else. There are many cheap ones around, I have used a few to try them out, most have been ok, some were rubbish. Personally I avoid ones that cap your bandwidth so I go for unlimited bandwidth and accept a restriction on the bitrate and listener slots, I don't need 9999 listener slots... You can get on the air for under £1 GBP per month with a low bitrate and not a lot more for a 128kbps stream. That's my opinion for ya. (Y)

Just realised this is Ask the Experts section.... I don't claim to be an expert, just giving my view.

It is no problem you did fine.

Anyways... I would see what sites people use and how good they are. Check to see if it has good reviews online. Remember Expensive is not always better.

I've seen my share of hosts come and go... so I have questions I always ask:

What is your backbone provider?

How many backbones are you on?

Do you offer a control panel?

What is your up time policy?

Do you support pre-roll and if so can I change it on my own?

Do you use Hurricane?

Are your servers in the US?

How many hops does it take from your server to the first external IP?

What is the throughput on your server? (10 mb? 100 mb? 1 gig?)

What's the throughput on the router that it's connected to?

What's the line that your server is on? (OC-3? OC-48? T-1?)

Do your server packages have a margin of expanding for small amounts of time when there's a full server and you need to increase your number for a short period?

Linux?

How do you handle billing?

Can you offer subscription streams?

Can you offer port 80?

Thanks,

Chris J. Popp
