James
Most top 40 stations stick to a trend, whatevers high ranked in the charts, they play. But its not always the same with internet stations, most are based on a genre (like rock or country) and they play just those kind of song not what people rate.. I personally think that is entirely right because you could play a hated song amongst your listeners. What are you? A Genre Person Or A Trendy Person? THREETEN RADIO
Personally I am a genre person, my main stream is 70s, 80s and 90s pop and I have an additional 80s only stream. People either like the music from these decades or they don't. When I look for a station to listen to I will go for the genre everytime. That's my 2 cents worth. MADcHATTER
Well iWebRadio is a variety station we have shows from all kinds of genre's of music. From Rock and metal to blues to easy listening and country. We even have a couple dj's who promote their countries Music (IE: Australia & Canada). We've been told we might stand a better chance of survival if we went to one genre solid. Well, we're still going after 3½ years and our listenership is growin slowly but steadily. We're not out to become the next Knac or whatever. The whole idea is to provide listeners a variety. all kinds of people want all kinds of music! nitnitr
Being a Christian station, I suppose I play a genre, but even within the Christian genre, there are subsets of music, and there are stations that play just one subset. Lead Me To The Rock Radio plays generally Christian AC, but overnight (in the U.S.) it switches to Christian CHR and Rock. Some other stations play inspirational, some hymns, some only shows or other programming. I'll agree with Madchatter that it's probably best for Internet stations to stick to a genre to build listeners, especially at the beginning, but we also have the freedom to play what we like. If I like certain types of music, and program that on the station, I'm betting that there has to be some others out there that like it too. manojjonam10
I usually like live telecast aired about genres, most ly from 90's and 80's.I am not much with the trend style.Diversity of music played also differs with the genre.
mpmss1
I agree with MADcHATTER as well. I have myself found that listeners are tuning in to hear a specific genre. If someone wants 70s, they don't want to hear 80's, 90's, etc. but then again there are many that like a great mix. In my opinion the more you can cater to your listeners in a specific genre the better chance you have of them sticking around and listening for a longer period of time. Just my two cents worth for what it maybe worth.

Id like to see a station that does it on internet radio! aaronsnet
We have had a freeform format for 6 years now, and have been successful with it. I think a lot of people aren't used to hearing all sorts of genres mixed together because of the divisions in music that have been created. If people would take the time to open their minds to new sounds and things, they would find that there are many great things about each style of music. It seems that corporate radio has the idea that people aren't intelligent enough to be able to handle more than the top 40. They think that we need to hear the same songs every 4 to 5 hours...pound those particular songs into a person's head, then they love it. There have been many many top 40 songs that I personally haven't thought had any appeal, but end up making it big because people just hear it over and over. Our station has been striving to take away the musical boundaries that have been created in music. Our hosts have the freedom to say and play whatever they desire. We mix independent with main stream, new and old. We have everything from rap, country, reggae, rock, pop, alternative, latin, christian, polka, jazz, blues, bluegrass, techno, etc. You name it, we play it. It has been very interesting to create and maintain a station that is unique. Even other freeform stations will limit themselves from playing some genres...but not us. It's been a lot of fun.
