Shortage of radio jobs?

No different anywhere James. Mainstream radio has for many years and still is "Dead Mans Shoes" even if you are lucky enough to get a foot in the door of a big commercial then it's the graveyard slot until you prove your metal, even then there is no saying that you will ever end up on the flagship i.e. Breakfast as different jocks, due to style, will always be put where the station believes they will attract the biggest listenership. By way of example, take the late John Peel, on BBC Radio 1 for years he was always in the late night spot because that is where the BBC worked out where his type of show pulled the most listeners.

What annoys me the most is when you find a radio station with a show hosted by those "talent show winners" and the likes.

They have no experience in broadcasting, but all because they were on tv singing some songs, some radio bosses think "oh, a radio show with him/her would be a great idea".

Well it's not! Certainly not in the case of a couple of folks I can think of who I heard on a commercial station. For those in the UK....remember Michelle McManus or whatever her name was?

Uh huh, she was given her own Friday night show on a commercial station in Glasgow and believe me, it was awful!!!

You either have what it takes to be a presenter or not. Folks like those "wannabe" celebs from silly tv shows just should not be allowd on-air full stop!

After all, a good Friday night slot could be better off with someone who actually sounds good and knows exactly what they are doing.

I don't think for one moment they are in the studio alone either! No way, they will have folks pressin all the right buttons and doing cue's and the likes all for 'em. Again, just proving that they do NOT belong on the radio....

They may have won some talent singin show but they can't learn to be a presenter just like that!

That said, other shows who have a host and invite them in for a chat, or to play their fave songs are all fine.

just don't let the wannabe's show their talentless side on-air!!! It's just not what radio is for in my view.....leave it to the pro's and who have radio and presenting in their blood.

Rant mode now off - phew!

kwdservices-

I know it's been awhile since you posted. But do you happen to listen to the SPORTS JUNKIES on 106.7 the Fan in D.C.?

BEST sports talk radio around. I get a kick out of those guys. I'm so glued in to them that if I can't hear their stream on the Web (since I live in Nebraska), that I listen to EVERY single podcast. That's how hooked I am.

Wouldn't surprise me. A few personalities here in the Washington, D.C. area have been fired when they had very high ratings and people loved them.

That's the way it is. In this modern day of radio, stations have far fewer dollars to be paying long term contracts for high profile talent.

Here in NZ (Johnny you can probably back me up on this) the increasing trend is towards networking a show. Rather than having a local announcer talking about local stuff, it's all about getting one guy in Auckland to present a show for the entire country - hardly local or relevant - and the downside of this is that it also takes away local announcing jobs.
