What steps do you do before starting your show?

Recommended Posts

As the title asks, What steps do you do before starting your show? Do you just go on without content? Or do you browse the net while your on air? Do you plan the day before or an hour before?

Show us your preparation plan!

All of the above, depending on what week it is haha

Last week we went on with very little prep, and as a result the show was directionless (It's supposed to be part music/debate/banter). On other shows before we did TOO MUCH prep, and it was all crammed in to such an extent that it ended up... directionless.

I'm still relatively new at this radio nonsense so I'm sure that over time I'll fall into a suitable pattern. :biggrinthumb:

being a 3 hour talk show that a bunch of people have to get together for..it's pretty much all holy hell breaking loose about 2 hours before.

I'm trying to clean my room up, get all the last minute audio that I want to get to a. I load up Zara's hotkeys with the audio that I cut (I use the jungle bars, there's 9 pages with 9 hotkeys per page. makes it real easy, I just always have to remind myself on my prep sheet where my audio is haha) then by about 6:00 people start showing up, we listen to music hang out till everyone gets there, maybe put some stuff up on the white board if it's looking a little empty. Then we go live at 7pm. heh

It's a truly hair raising experience, but it's so amazing at the same time.

Wow, I can go on for hours responding to this thread, however I will do the best I can. So many of my listeners wonder how a broadcaster prepares for a show, the equipment, etc.

Anyhow, for a show ("The Show" w/ JJ the DJ is the hit program at Jersey's Classic Rock and it airs weekdays from 11am-2pm) - I wake up at 6:00am every weekday morning, so that gives me a good five hours to produce that day's show. The show is topic-driven so first I check my email inbox for topics, as many listeners send in topics that they want to hear. After that is finished, it's the newspaper, the internet, any interesting and juicy stories, "stupid" news, etc. I try and focus on redundant topics, not ones that have a short life because the show is very organized (formatted to go one way, and one way only), for instance, if a talk segment is 10 to 15 minutes, it will be 10 to 15 minutes, and then i'll go to a break. If I decide to change it up, it will be in the future, not during a show, etc. I find that listeners expect to hear certain parts of the show at that specific time. If horoscopes were to be aired an hour early, listeners that were tuning in during that specific time would be confused.. Etc.

Any sound effects, music, etc is also prepared during that five hour prep session. It's all placed in a section dated whatever the date of that particular show is (organized :). The music is picked out before the show starts as well which definitely makes it easier to organize talk segments, breaks, etc.

I make a cup of tea when I wake up. But right before the show, it's back to another cup of tea, i'm in my chair, audio prepped, video stream all up and running (Video is live directly from the studio during each show), and we're off. :)

That is the short version. There really is so much more that goes into prepping for a show. Listeners hear the show and a lot of them wonder: "this is so easy!" "I wish I could do this, it can't be that hard!" "I'm gonna be the next Z100!" However, (and I am not trying to be negative here) it's not easy upholding and maintaining a radio station & a show. Dedication is needed.

I do this full-time. It needs to be perfect every day. :)

Best Regards,
