Variety on Smooth Radios

Recommended Posts

Tony Blackburn's gotta come top of the list, sa good and enthusiastic today as he was 30 years ago.

Next it's gotta be Lynn Parsons, a highly professional and underrated broadcaster, with a wonderful wry sense of humour.

Graham Dene and Mark Goodier also highly rated in my book.

Not for me. Graaham Dene is worst of all Smooth Break show presenters. Love the others on all other Smooths and variety of music during day shows is worst in London than anywhere else.

Sharon and John on Smooth Glasgow offer far wider diversity of records and really good features too. Tom Davies on Smooth NE has their tv theme spot each morning before 7am whilst Eamon Kelly and Nick Piercey present in magnificent styles on Smooth E and W whilst Smooth NW play list is far more varied and soulful. Sunday shows London is worst by far than any other.

Only time london scores is Tony Myatt nostalgia over night and Eammon Kelly`s Easy Listening Fri 11pm

Andy Peebles outstanding Soul show is networked from Smooth NE and Tony Blackburn weekend break networks from somewhere else as well.

Must admit I've not checked out any of the non-London Smooths. As London's the only one I get to hear on the radio, and there's just too many other stations to listen to in the net. How about Magic? The worst incarnation of that is imo the London one.

Of course the reason why each station sounds slightly differently is because of the fact that the stations in the NW and London have to play a quota of jazz music overnight. The two where originally jazz fm and when ofcom granted them a format change the condition was that they played (i think) 40 hours of jazz each week.

This is why they dont take the networked evening and overnight show from Smooth NE.

And the reason each one sounds different all depends on if their sister stations Real and Century Radio broadcast in that area.

In the middleands they play younger easy listening music as they have no Real Station to cater for that audience.

Whereas in the NW/NE/Scotland GMG have a Real/Century station in that area so would effectively be competing against themselves!
