Upload bandwidth

Recommended Posts

Just wondered if anyone has any info on upload bandwidth. I'm currently streaming 128K via a standard ISP connection (Luckily my ISP does not limit upload capacity). I'm still able to use my broadband for normal use as well. I'm just thinking about adding another low band 24 or 32K stream, but I'm not sure whether I'll get away using my existing connection and still be able to surf the net etc. I don't really want to have to pay for another broadband package. Thanks for any help.

If your upload speed can take it then you could only do this with another PC on a router as I don't know any application where you can send out 2 different streams at different bitrates on the same PC. Although you can surf the web and that while streaming, it may make your stream skip that you are unaware of, I hear this a lot, mainly do to do with processor resources. If you have a dual core processor you probably won't have this issue. Again, the answer is to have one PC just for the streaming and another for surfing etc...

Thanks for the reply. I run a P4 2.6 with simplecast on it and it also runs a software processor as well. I think simplecast has the ability to run multiple encoders. I was wondering more about the effects on my upload bandwidth, which I think is about 450K . Would it mean that I'd be using 160K of my 450K upload (128 + 32)? I'd really want my streams to run without buffering and clicks etc.

I have tried simplecast using more than one stream, I think it works but not to the same server port so if you have another server to stream to then it should be ok. You may well get away with it but TBH the best way to find out is to try some test transmissions. Announce them also on your station, the anoraks love that sort thing. :biggrinthumb:

I am pretty sure you will not have a connection at home that can handle the amount of listeners if you get listed on iTunes. Yes it will be 128k for every listener that tunes in, and 32k for every listen that tunes in.

So if you have 2 128kbit listeners your upload will be about 256kb/s

If you have 450 kb/s connection, you will be able to have about 3 128kbps listeners without any buffering.

No sorry I think there's some confusion here. I don't stream from home. I stream from a remote server....monthly contract. It was just my upload bandwidth coping with more than a 128 stream that I was wondering about. I'm probabley not explaining it ver well! The server that I use has a max 200.

Submit your station to iTunes, there is a thread about it on here somewhere, your listener stats will triple, mine did. (Y)

Itunes is over rated yes my station is on there but also submit to windows media also I went from 10-15 tuned in to hundreds have to file paper work with them but its worth it.

If iTunes is the current hype then why not join 'em :) Id rather more listeners than my compeditors getting all the traffic.

Like threeten radio asked, could we get some more info? This could be article worthy :)
