How to choose Shout Host?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am new to ShoutCast. I am wondering what we should consider when choosing Shoutcast host? and how to see if the price is reasonable, not too good to be ture.

Also, why some host doesn't mention the storage space (for MP3 upload)?

If some plans doesn't come with AutoDJ, how can I manage playlist or FTP my MP3?

Again, I am new to Shoutcast. Sorry if there is any stupid question.

Thank you!

Hello, first of all Welcome to Broadcasting World.

Things you should consider when choosing a host is their uptime report, customer support, and reviews from others.

View This: http://www.broadcastingworld.net/reviews/hosts/

Some hosts are listed here

Some hosts don't mention storage space, because they may not offer the storage space.

If plans dont come with Auto-DJ, you cannot upload songs as you cannot use auto-dj to broadcast.

Welcome to BW !

If you are new to broadcasting I guess you have to figure out first of all what you are willing to do.

I don't read into your message anything about streamsoftware etc etc

So I guess you are really new into the world of media .. and you are in search for a way to broadcast a content to an audience, either listeners in general or friends

I would recommend you to make a google search and try to find out what different types of stream software is used

Download some trials and check out what is possible or not ...

By doing that you gonna learn lots about the features etc etc

Secondly .. at the time you have discovered the best software who compares with your view and wishes .. decide to buy a legal copy

Before doing anything else it can be a good idea to visit some websites who offers free slots - notice : their quality isn't the same as a real "paid" streamprovider - but you gonna learn how everythings works .. ex.: how to stream to a provider etc etc

After that period of time you can decide yourself if you are able to setup a stream to a streamprovider because you have the experience about it .. ex.: Do you have a stable internet connection ? Is your upload ok ? Do you wanna broadcast 24/7 or specific sheduled times ? etc etc

If the answers are "yes" you are ready to start streaming ...

BUT ... to do streaming audio you have to choose a station name, you need a jingle pack etc .. and last but not least you have to pay your royalties for the music who's played

If you are just willing to use an AUTO-DJ system provided by a stream provider .. I guess its gonna cost you lots more than the setup of your "own" stream to a streamprovider ... By streaming your own content to a stream provider you have to pay only the amount of slots aka the plan you are choosing + the royalties ..

Storage space to store content for AUTO-DJ streaming only gonna cost you lots more

My advice is = look around, tell about it, choose the best solution to your needs and decide what you are willing to do with your project

Feel free to look around at BW, post a reply to topics if you think the content compares with what you are looking for ... ask and you gonna receive answers

If you have probs with technical details .. post a topic into "ask the experts"

Hope this was usefull to your services

Thanks MarcAlle & GKREurope!

I think I got very good info from both of you. Even though GKREurope makes me a little bit worry that I am not ready at all. But I think may be... I just start with some host first... start small to play around, get some ideas with inexpensive host/plan. MarcAlle's Stream 101 may be a good start for me.

Actually, I look around, some hosts look good, but they don't response my mails!!

I like iWebFusion too. but they didn't reply me. For this host, I think contact form on the site is not working. Because when I submit the form, i didn't get the the automatic reply mail. If anyone know this host, tell them to check it out.

After I know better about broadcasting, and if I like it, I will go to next step as GKREurope suggested.

Again, thank you both! and this wonderful forum!

  • 2 weeks later...

unbeatable prices = buffering, drop outs, poor bandwidth and transit providers, less listeners, stress for stream host, stream host closure.

look for one that offers telephone support 24/7 on site engineers and preferably one that own their own servers and co-locates them.

Once again if the prices are cheap or unbeatable your host is overselling and this will not do you or them any favors.
