  1. 1. What Kind Of Server Do You Use To Broadcast

Recommended Posts

I used to use icecast,(provided from LC) just because I like the multi-bit transcoding, the only reason I don't use it now is because I dont know if I would have to licence all the different streams even if it is the same source.

But running it on a server, I have thought about it. Less CPU usage is a great thing.

Dont get me wrong, I love SC, but with TAG gone, the future of shoutcast is jaded. That guy was a true guru of his craft in coding DNAS.

So the future might be looking good for other means of streaming delivery, its just a matter of time before a coder smart enough one-ups DNAS.

If you dont know about TAG, find the thread here.

It will happen. I can already be a phycic and tell you what to expect in the future.

Easy port override. Similar to how WHMSonic did the "portDJ". Make it so one DJ can override a port another DJ is streaming on. It would make backup files obsolete. One DJ is streaming on a port and another DJ comes on via another port that overrides that.

Then multi-source streaming. I'm sure its possible, but I haven't seen it yet. Imagine multiple sources on the air at the same time in different locations for an internet show. No hybrids, just three people streaming to different ports on the same server and the server returning the sum of all three to the listeners.

I then see (puts on physic pyramid) Windows Media Player supports AAC+ without a plug in. If you haven't heard, their are reports all OVER the place of WMP 12 logging into DNAS.

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=304406

No confirmed reports of it tuning into an AAC+ stream yet.

This is going to change the way a lot of people stream if it does support AAC+. A dial up listener can recieve near CD quality?

LOL then again, according to a very reliable source, it couldn't tune into MP3 from shoutcast on his logs. That has me worried if Microsoft wanted to deal with all us shoutcasters not using Windows media streamer, and they could choke us out like that EASILY using this tactic. With WMP 12 coming out, its going to have a big role in all our streaming futures.

after that, some hellfire and brimstone..... I see this clearly...... (smacks crystal ball a few times)

OH! and then a major surge of internet radio listeners in the US provided H.R.848 passes in combination with the recent deal where the NAB already hosed their whole group in the last deal with sound exchange via 2015. I also see sirius radio going under again and no one bailing them out. Either that or a HUGE price spike for service.

Im feeling pretty optimistic about AAC+ streaming in WMP 12 right now.

Keep in mind as well DRM mentioned here is no longer a factor.

Sorry to rain on any parades, but I was also curious about AAC+ streaming in WMP12, so I loaded up my beta version of Windows 7 to test it. I connected normally to a 128k MP3 stream fine, but when I tried connecting to our AAC+ 32k stream, it failed saying it didn't have the correct codec. Then after reading the Ars article about WMP12, I set up a encoder using the original AAC at 32k, and that also failed to play in WMP12.

Of course it's all still a beta product and very well could change before it's released. For me, I'm sticking with streaming WMA at 96k. There are a ton of benefits, and you can get a Windows 2008 server for the same cost of a Linux server at some datacenters now.
