James
This is obviously the first time BW has brought Streaming Video into our site. With the new updates we will be giving Stream Video enthusiasts a chance to shine. Id also like to welcome "saint", a SHOUTcast and NSV specialist, (Check out his site). Im sure you will see him around on the forums and see his articles around our site. Back to the subject, how many BWers actually know or have heard about NSV? (Nullsoft Streaming Video). Dont know what it is? Want to try it out? BWorld
I've definitely heard of it and Stream101 has even toyed around with it a lot. There is just not a demand for NSV from what we've seen as many people do not have the time, or the resources to get it going. Occasionally we will get a single person asking about it, in which we will set up an account for them, but other than that, noone has really inquired about in when we had it on our site for about a year. ██ Stream101 | Affordable Media Solutions ██ Shared cPanel? Brutish Sailor
Allen, not that I will disagree, but this is the general feedback from most of my PM's on the WHMsonic forums BEGGING for it... Right now flash live stream is very expensive (Flash Media Server, Wowza) if you team create some like WHMSonic for video (Live and On demand) That would be a great product. always the same talk. The biggest two barriers are: everyones upload times and auto DJ for it. When NSV2 comes out, and a NSV_trans hits the market, its over. As is, most ISP's will HIT THE ROOF if you uploaded 24/7 with minimum requirements and start screaming TOS violations. But the truth of it is, most players are starting to supprt video streaming from movie view sites, hell, you can upload a movie with XBOX 360. Its only a matter of time before this hits it big. Its just the lack self produced content thats going to kill it from being real big... Now, someone makes a website to download royalty free media for NSV, and Its going to be a start. No one saw how big Utube was going to be as far as self produced content. Next thing you know Lonelygirl15 was a CNN story for being a hoax. HUGE audience. NSV 2 will rule the earth. Clubs doing live feeds to promote their popularity when its packed. Hotels doing streams to promote themselves because its public media accesable via SC. U-tube "channels" doing real channel streaming with those years of collected footage. OH, and those guys that watched "jackass" and thought it would be fun to record shooting themselves in the face with an air pistol looping over and over again, with their occasional band shots. All it takes is one BIG success story of someone getting wide scale attention with NSV and the sheep will flock to it like a sheperd Just a matter of time. James
Now, someone makes a website to download royalty free media for NSV, and Its going to be a start. This can be arranged on here ;). Was that a suggestion? :biggrinthumb: Studiio - All-In-One Radio Communication Platform SMS | Phone Calls | Social Media | Content
Brutish Sailor
It would be pretty tough to do. Let me see if I can find out the legalities. I wouldnt even know where to start looking as far as NSV licensed requirements. This is the key sentence here. All it takes is one BIG success story of someone getting wide scale attention with NSV and the sheep will flock to it like a sheperd KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
James
Ok Thanks Ive always been interested in NSV, but i dont have the computer, camera or the server to do it! BUT id love to learn more and thats why we have introduced NSV. Its been quite popular at winamps forums and i hope AOL can give the go-ahead for the NSV team to develop a new version! It will take a bit longer i think with TAG gone from their forums. NickSS
While i admire your enthusiasm i wouldnt be holding out for any development on NSV. This is only my opinion but the the chances of anything moving with NSV are very remote as even the current one is beta and is like a 3 legged racehorse. The nsv forums are only busy with the regulars that do a mighty good job as enthusiasts and no more but the boat has sailed for that one imo. From a hosts point of view with flash becoming more affordable and easily available for regular users and a much better supported encoder it is definately the way forward. People just dont ask for NSV anymore and we have removed it as a product. There has never been any support for it apart from the regulars andwhilst there is a few people in the winamp tv list a good percentage of it is used by the porn industry to advertise their wares. As far as im aware no one has ever got any form of NSV_trans going with any consistancy and stabillity and even Jays NSVX i think its called never got finished. alongside the fact that it only plays in winamp and a few others stops it from being accepted like flash that works on any platform. Dont get me wrong im not condeming the new section and i hope it builds the comunity even bigger. Good Luck with it.
chq
i have experimented with nsv in the past and i think its really good. i was quite surprised on how easy it was to get nsv up and running
Brutish Sailor
That it is. WHAT it really needs is a shot in the arm from someone like the oddsock org. or Ices crew. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
Brutish Sailor
Im thinking about setting up a NSV stream, but trying to figure out how to work around the 1.5 down/320kbps up my DSL has provided me with. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
saint
Thanks for the ShoutOut James NSV led the way for the average person to become a global broadcasters. Icecast carried the torch and introduced Theora. Bandwidth cost is always a factor, even with the over optimistic ideas of " flat rate bandwidth " cost averaging. A single gig is only that - a single gig. Once that single gig is used - thats it - game over - time to buy more. Peer to Peer file trading blazed a trail that showed the potential for mass content distribution and a fraction of the cost. There are currently two developement teams working on Open Source peer to peer multimedia streaming software applications. ( Live streaming using free - bittorrent based - peer to peer applications. ) One project is being heavily funded by the European Union and the other project is recieving support from several South American organizations. Server to client multimedia distribution is extremely ineffecient and costs a small fortune to distirbute content to a large audience. Be it NSV or Theora - Peer to Peer streaming wont go away, and just like the Linux thorn in the side of Windows - Peer to Peer streaming will continue to chip away at the main stream method of multimedia streaming. Vardace
I think the problem with NSV is the upload requirements, like mentioned by Brutish Sailor. I am hosting a few ShoutcastTVs with NSV which comes with autoTV playlists that run off the server which has plenty of upload bandwidth. The service is unlimited space and bandwidth, we charge by the viewer and it seems like people are pretty happy with it. I also don't think too many people know about it, seems like when I tell a few people about the possibilities of ShoutcastTV they try it out and like it. Vardace
Actually, it is sc_nsv. Gives the ability to stream nsv files from a playlist on the server 24/7. Much like autoDJ. Since most people have a hard time broadcasting at 500 kbps and above with this tool I can provide the TV service at a much higher quality. Unlimited Space and Bandwidth are key and it doesn't hurt to give all the tools with the account free of charge. All services are instantly installed so there is no waiting. I'm trying to offer a service people would want at an affordable price, and no BS whilst promoting our company in a hidden way to encourage users to sign up. streamer45
I've been broadcasting using NSV since 3 years ago. For sure it's not the best format to use with a lot of people but flash costs lot of money (like 900$ for the server) and has not peer to peer capabilities yet

DaveyC
I was a big fan of NSV for a good while, i used to really enjoy using it, and even hosted a few live tv shows with a friend. People would call in live on air and everything was great. At that time, the one downside was getting it to play on a website. You needed the active x control to be installed, but now with JW player being able to play NSV, this alleviates some of the complications that users would have tuning in. But, there's one problem that still remains from the broadcasters standpoint. The streaming tools. Although the tools that are out there work, and work rather well, i think for the new broadcaster it becomes rather difficult. For example, setting up an MP3 shoutcast stream is well documented and easy. There's an array of tools (Sam broadcaster, DSP Plugin etc) that allow you to get streaming as easily as possible. I could fill my winamp up with a list of tunes, connect the DSP plugin, and hit play! With NSV however, i needed a video capture device, dvd players, a vision mixer, all running into NSVcap (great tool), etc etc. Although NSVcap is well documented, and pretty easy to get streaming, I think that the tools do have some limitations for the first time, amateur broadcaster. I personally think, if there was a tool a little like sam broadcaster, that could allow you to playlist videos, and even camera shots (Like you could do in winamp with linerec:// i think it was), there would be a lot more people taking up NSV.
