kwdservices
We have a Part15 station, and the whole concept is pretty cool. I wish the FCC could bump USA Part15 up to 1 watt or so, but what they give is plenty to get decent range, at least with AM, and especially if you put up 2 or 3 transmitters. http://am1000rangemaster.com is the brand of transmitters we use. They're a little more expensive then some other Part15 transmitters, but they're the best built out of all AM transmitters out there.
JBVoice
I use to run a small neighborhood part15 station here in Baltimore, which even though the range is low, the houses are all close together and it got a decent range with the antenna on the roof I think what I did was illegal though, but, it still was a pretty cool idea. I was originally planning to get a Part 15 FM station, but I did my research and found out I could have a stronger signal legally on the AM side of the dial with the am 1000 rangemaster. If I have the time this summer, I may just buy one and start up a station!

wildun
I do part 15 on fm. As Karl said, AM is probably the better choice range wise. If I were to do it over I'd go AM. I manage to get a little range using multiple transmitters spaced apart. The key is using quality equipment that is specifically for part 15. Again to quote Karl, Rangemaster seems to be the best on the market in my opinion, that is fcc approved.
gc985radio
wow, what part of town? I had a 1 watt part15 fm in near middle river,we started with a ptek 10 watt exciter, sold that and put a digital broadcast warehouse tx1 ,you could hear the ptek anywhere from aberdeen to dundalk when it was running full power but the ptek had no harmonics filter and was expensive to run. we never got caught=) I use to run a small neighborhood part15 station here in Baltimore, which even though the range is low, the houses are all close together and it got a decent range with the antenna on the roof I think what I did was illegal though, but, it still was a pretty cool idea. RadioBrandy
You can make a nice living with a network of part 15 transmitters; FM is best for multiple dwelling units like apartments and condo complexes. One of our part 15 FM stations covers a thousand units in one complex, others cover 600 units scattered around town. Part 15 AM works best in rural areas and when networked together; one broadcaster is putting a network of 13 part 15 AM transmitters together to cover an area of 30,000 with a strong signal http://www.outlawradio.us has a section showing you how to network the transmitters together, using Barix & microwave links.
