Dealing with stream rippers

Recommended Posts

I have noticed alot of stream rippers out of germany have been operating on a friends stream. What are some ways to combat these rippers and maybe stop them in the future?

Im thinking of adding a stream ripper ban list to our webcasting section, then people can instantly ban these i.p's. :biggrinthumb:

Your thoughts/suggestions? (Y)

First of all, you've entered a time-consuming zone. Many are on Dynamic IP, so you ban 'em and they pop up later on a new IP etc. A lot of them you won't even be able to identify as they masqerade as known player agents.

But, that said, I make life difficult, so I use Title Mangling. Basically, based on a dotme application, I send the song titles in varying forms, changes every minute. Generally they end up with one minute song chunks so they don't hang around. You'll never win, just make life difficult.

True but that is atleast level 2 ripping. Im talking about the level 1, obvious robot stream rippers. They can be easily blocked when we catch all the i.p's, they are usually on for more than 4 hours and i have had many of these!

Hi James,

The attached script was once already uploaded to your former "download" section at BW

Its a php script.

Change IP, Port, Shoutcast user + password and it has a "name" section for known rippers

Upload to your website / webspace and open it into your browser - it only works if the page is opened

obvious robot stream rippers!

- First of all it looks that those "German" fakers have left a part of Europe and are now operational at your side of the World .. because not that many are currently appearing at Our streams

- Secondly .. most of those as "German" known IPs are not really German .. most of them are fake - random IPs who are coming from all around the world and who are generated by a Russian service who's trying to get the much as possible MP3 details. They can be seen as "spambots" .. but used to attack audiostreams with as result, in some cases, that if 100 fake IPs are entering the stream "at the same time" .. some streamproviders are getting down ... and if the user / station of that stream is not having an unlimited stream ... he is having to pay each Month for "fake" listeners

- 3rd : I already made into an earlier topic (somewhere at BW) my point of view about those streamrippers

a) they do take advantage in a rather "un-asked" way of other people their services

b) but We are living in Todays world .. and this means that almost any MP3 mediaplayer has these days also a streamripper setting ... in other words to record parts of a broadcast ... aka to edit and copy full MP3s

c) streamripping has excist also before audiostreaming ... at the time (early 70s) the first combi cassette decks / radioplayers where available people recorded also songs or complete radiosets to make for themself an archive of special moments .. If a cassette tape had a good quality it was even used to being played at a family reunion

Those days everyone has done this .. nobody told anything bad about it .. it was the most common thing who could happen - Into the 80s it became even possible to shedule cassette decks to make any recording at a specific time

My conclusion is that in the Today world we have to live with those kinds of technology .. willing or not

If a stations has for example a daily listener who is using a Reciva mediaplayer (basic settings have streamripping !) .. that person don't gonna get access anymore because he/she is banned from the stream .. however that listener is "just" listening.

I used it also at the start of my project .. but have deleted it from my server directories ... because after some weeks .. nobody is connected anymore .. reason is simple as quoted on top of this ... most of them are using one

The time that WinAmp and MediaPlayer where the only ones is gone and lots of other types of players are available to the public

The only thing you can do to manage your current problem is to set your shoutcast as "non-public aka privat" stream ... This way your stream don't gonna be recognized by those streambots ... after a while you can set the stream back as "public"

If you are using Sam Broadcaster there is an 'anti-rip' Pal script that delays the song titles of the streaming track so that rippers that are looking for particular artists or albums will miss the first 'x' seconds of the track.
