What would you do if you were me?

Hello everyone,

In media sometimes you have to be professional first and a friend second. I cringe at the thought but business is business. I know this in itself sounds blank, empty and selfish and that’s not who I am. Would you axe your friend(s) from a production you’ve been working on? You know that this person(s) hasn’t done anything wrong to deserve this but you feel you need to get rid for production reasons.

Best Wishes

If it's something you're putting your name to, you want everything to be 100% so I would say although it might be a difficult decision to make, you have to "weild the razor blade" and make the cuts if it benefits the production.

If something I had done ended up on the cutting room floor, I'd understand, particularly if I had respect for that producer's professional work.

Hope this helps, Kris.

well, before you risk your friendship, I'd suggest to evaluate the reasons why you need to let this person go and see if maybe solutions can be found to avoid going the drastic route. you could explain the various reasons to your friend and ask him if he can think of solutions, he may come up with a great alternative or he may also be the one coming up with withdrawing from the project.

Good luck!

Trust me...I've been there!

When it comes down to your production, something with your name on it, and you can't afford to take chances with your reputation...the choice is simple. Explain it to your friend in open and honest terms.

I have told every friend of mine the same thing since I was a kid. All I want is honesty! If your going to be my friend remember this, I'll be the first person to call you on your s**t...and I expect nothing less in return!

If something has my name and rep riding on it and my "friends" stuff isnt up to snuff, sorry I'll tell him the truth and explain that it doesnt affect our friendship...unless he thinks so little of our friendship that he lets it come between us. But this is my life here and I have to do what I think is best!

My only question would be if its a matter of the quality of his part, is it something that can be worked out. If not, then sorry...it goes from the project but my friend wont go from my life (unless he makes this an issue!).

Nuff Said!

As a media manager this is why I don't hire friends and why I don't allow employees to become friends. That doesn't mean I am aloof - I just don't break out the X-Box and invite them over. I have always preferred to keep business and friendship (family, too) separate. Tough call.

as all things in life its about risk and reward.

the risk is obvious depending on how understanding he is you could lose your friend or just have a discussion about it and it all be forgotten?

if the reward is great then the chances are your friend will understand?

im not entirely sure on what your project is that you may be cutting him from but i was in a similar situation, i was dj'ing on this radio station on my own then my mate started to get int dj'ing and asked if he could join me so i said yeah why not, when we did a set together it didnt go great his mixing was all over the shop so i was going to say look im gonna do the station on my own from now on, but instead i helped him improve his mixing and now we are "great" together, is this something you are able to help your friend improve with?

If I were you, I'll speak to this friend, just like Claire said, try to hame some reasons who can explain why you don't want him on the project, and specially try to make him understand why u want this production. You also can try to work with him, let him a part of the job.
