buzz95
I'm a new station and right now all we have is a 128k stream, do you think adding an additional stream would help me increase listeners? and if so what bitates?
shoutcaststreaming
For people still on dial up, you might want to add a 32k stream. Also a 48k or 64k stream playing AAC+ can bring listeners. buzz95
first off how many are still on dial up? and how do you stream aac+ i myself done know much about it?
Brutish Sailor
agreed. It depends on what you target group. 32k is a pretty good stream for dial up and modern phone streaming. 24k can be handled by some phones for streaming due to the catch. Its also a decent bitrate. Also their is AAC+ if you have audiophiles/ a lot of winamp users that tune into your site. Its not used much because until JUST recently, as only players with the orbin plug-in supported it. WINAMP has supported this Codec for a bit. It is not a free Codec. What does that mean? Companies that use it in their player have to pay somebody. SO, with that being said, WMP11 and Itunes didnt carry it. It will be carried in the WMP12 RC. You should be looking at your DNAS logs to figure out who is tuning in. That will give you an idea of what you second stream should be. Why 128k isnt used as much as people would think? a couple of reasons. 1) If someone does a lot of internet trafficing, its going to kick the players off. 2) If they are at work, a workplace doesnt usually allow streams over 48k to be tuned into, because of the bandwidth use. A blade server balancing out 20 different work stations doesnt like 128k eating up the andwidth. Slows all the computers down of people actually working. So yeah, you deffinantly want to offer a second stream. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
buzz95
so in your opinions sould i go with 128k, 32k,48k and 64k streams?
Brutish Sailor
With that being said... ..... Ok do you think your station would be more able to pick up office workers? 32k MP3 (also good for home users with a lot of traffic on the comp, no player stops). Do you think you would be more able to pick up a younger crowd with winamp users and heavy traffic computer users? Shoot for 32k AAC. Want to shoot for audiophiles? 64k AAC+ (Thats provided your source for music is VERY CLEAN.) No limewire rips or crap of that nature, otherwise 64 AAC+ will be pointless as your sound will be off.) Its all up to you to choose. Keep in mind your streaming capabilities from home as well. 128k and 64K is a lot of bandwidth for generic DSL. Brutish Sailor
What do you use to broadcast? Software wise. No shame here, I use winamp (very proud supporter of Winamp, AOL or no AOL) KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego

Brutish Sailor
Ok, from the looks of things, all you should have to do is add select encoder. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
shoutcaststreaming
The AAC and AAC+ encoders are only in SAM4 and later, I believe. Not in SAM2 or SAM3. BWorld
The AAC and AAC+ encoders are only in SAM4 and later, I believe. Not in SAM2 or SAM3. That is correct. Only SAM4 and above support AAC+. My two cents: AAC+ is awesome because it allows you to stream such a great sounding stream, at a much lower bitrate. You can get any shoutcast server to run aac+ too. (all of the latest Shoutcast servers for sure). The only down side to it is that not everyone can listen, saying that, they must have the Orbin plugin or use Winamp. ██ Stream101 | Affordable Media Solutions ██ Shared cPanel? buzz95
what if all i have is sam2?
Brutish Sailor
Then get the edcast stand alone DSP. Its a $#@@$ to setup for metadata. Takes a bit of tinkering. But it will work. Make sure you follow the instructions to get the AAC+ encoder and stick it in edcast file. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
countrywesterndj
what if all i have is sam2? I'd guess it was a copy over 6 years old. We haven't supported SAM2 in several years. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to SAM4. Brutish Sailor
Buzz, you dont have to resort to a cracked SAM. There is a TON of open source and freeware out there to stream. Winamp with SC DSP/ Edcast (that supports a lot more encoders) Edcast can be used standalone with a lot of music software. ZARA RADIO /w edcast rocks (still need to post the metadata tutorial) Guys like us are what these programs are made for. Yeah SAM is nice, but using a cracked version is giving the music industry one more reason to shut small broadcasters down, and we need to keep the revolution alive of radio that is not boring. Go open source. Its how I roll. Or for a lesser amount then SAM, go station playlist. SAM4 also has an optional plan to pay in 5 installments. so its like ... $50 - 60 a month. Not bad for a the product. But using old SAM software sucks... Its not the greatest of answers.... Codecs havent been updates, and streaming quality has improved since then. Brutish Sailor
I know its Ironic that a guy nicknamed "Brutish Sailor" is not for pirating software LOL. The software industry feeds off each other, and we need to keep it that way. I may not like SAM, but its concepts are going to feed the next open source player. Spacial isnt rich... Despite popular belief. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
BWorld
be more than happy to, wanna give me the money to do that? or instead should i continue to feed my kids? We hope you are not taking offense to this, but if you really do enjoy using SAM Broadcaster, I really do suggest upgrading to SAM4. If you upgrade to SAM4 there are a lot of bug fixes and many new things you can do with it. I love SAM4 and I'm looking forward to the next release. Money is really tight for me too, and I took advantage of the Monthly Payments option. ██ Stream101 | Affordable Media Solutions ██ Shared cPanel? Brutish Sailor
Wrather than get the winamp DSP, I recommend you go with Edcast, lest glitchy. The mixer isnt NEAR as special as Winamps, but it better for automation. First, install Winamp...THEN, install Edcast http://forums.broadcastingworld.net/showthread.php?t=7974&highlight=Edcast Need a good automation? Use Tabassco's Amazing clockwheel. http://forums.broadcastingworld.net/showthread.php?t=7949&highlight=amazing+clockwheel It takes a second to learn, and you need to follow the link on the instructions to get the hang of it. But once you do, this makes this stuff VERY easy for automation. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
