frankallen
Ive put this demo together but to be honest i dont think its that good, but i would like to try and improve my skills. What or where am i going wrong ? THREETEN RADIO
On the positive side, all nicely done, you have a talent for producing. On a slightly negative side, I thought on some of the "ads" you voice was not loud enough, needs to be more above the music but not distorted, perhaps have the backing music lower, also a bit too much reverb on a few of them. That is my view only on how I heard them and I am being critical but overall Frank i do think it is a fantastic demo, like I said, great production. :biggrinthumb:

Darren Altman
Hey Frank, listening now. On the first clip you need the music and voice balancing as the words get somewhat lost, also ditch the naff reverb, it makes you sound dated. Then it goes onto your next clip and the voice level drops considerably. Next your jingle and again the effects on your voice make it difficult to understand. Never compromise the words/message/clarity for tonnes of effects. Then your character... what the hell are you saying??!! You must make the words clear mate otherwise it's a pointless excercise. On the next clip the voice level drops again and your voice sounds rather flat IMO Onto your next jingle - it sounds dated Frank! Loose the echo!! Check out radio imaging and get an idea of what current effects and sweepers are being used to give a current edge, sorry but this sounds dated. Copy what you hear on radio stations and you'll get there. Finally your last clip. What???! I don't get this mate. Sorry if this all sounds rather frank Frank, but I was typing as I listened. You DID ask for positive critisism! To summarise. Make sure all your levels are the same on all the clips. Then NEVER compramise your words/the message for effects and reverb, think how a producer, ad agency or client would listen. They'd be furious if their product name was lost!! Listen listen and listen. Emulate ads and reads you like and this will help. I hope this has been helpful for you! Good luck with it all.

GKIye
Hi Frank, I agree 100% with the quote made by Darren - I have one major positive element to you : I love the general color of "your" voice (You are British isn't ?) - and I have also one major negative element : fix your volume levels, both on the voice and music Its my idea that if you fix on several parts the level of the voice and music .. you gonna create already a better result Currently your voice has at some parts to much effects and those effects are making that your voice is getting less important than the musicbed Hope this was usefull to you Visit and listen @ BW ! Brutish Sailor
I have heard jobs on FM radios that dont quite top this. But in agreement with the above stated. I still say well done. You have a voice for this, very enriched. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego

THREETEN RADIO
We are all here to help buddy. To me that was much better and would not sound out of place as an ad on any radio station. Maybe it could be perfected more but why bother, I have heard much worse on commercial radio. I like what you have done and it is done well. Top marks. frankallen
Thanks again but why perfect it ? umm i dont know i could do with some paid work thats a pretty good reason. LMAO who am i kidding.. But seriously thanks for the advice Frank http://i.imgur.com/qrEUBH7.png Check us out http://www.itsjustradio.org
THREETEN RADIO
You could get paid for that standard quite easily. If you want to perfect it then keep on trying and you are going the right way about it. If I heard that last take on the radio I would not think it was odd or out of place, I do genuinely think it is very good.

frankallen
Why Thank you sir, Im a strong believer that all criticism it good criticism no matter how bad it is. I asked everyone to be honest and they have been in the nicest way. I have taken on board everyones advice and use it to improve myself reading mock scripts, listening to local radio for there adds and getting a feel for whats up todate and cutting edge. JBVoice
I assume this is your first official demo? You should have heard mine, it was a joke lol. There is always room for improvement, with everyone. A few points I would like to make, well...pretty much what everyone else has said. You need to make sure the levels match, you vocals need to override the music. Also, between the different demos, one is louder and one is quieter....try and even those out, so they flow a bit more. Eventually, you might want to experiment with different effects, only placing them in the appropriate places. Reverb sounds great, I tend to use it to announce the website or repeating a phone number, for ex.: "For more information, please call 410-720-9254..... (VOICE FX) Thats 410-720-9154" You got a voice for the radio. Good luck! -JB Jon Bova "Successful people have libraries. frankallen
Hey there Jb Yes it was my first demo. And as you say always room for improvement. Thanks so much for you comments and advice on the effects i will bear that in mind and try a few things out when i have a few practice sessions. What would be the idea software to use any ideas on that ? i currently use audition 1.5 Thanks Again Frank http://i.imgur.com/qrEUBH7.png Check us out http://www.itsjustradio.org
GKIye
Hi Frank, I played a little around with your latest file Attached you'll find the results And as you say always room for improvement. I can't change anything to your voice EQ, because your voice is already mixed into your current musicbed However I added some EQ on top of it and I played around with the end (the echo part) I would advice you to add to your EQ on your voice some "more sparkle" .. this gonna make that your voice sounds more "clear" Before you make an edit / mix of your voice to the musicbed its most important to "normalize" all your voice sections .. means that with or without editing on your voice .. it gonna sounds "on 1 level" It can be a nice idea to make some demo's of your voice only (including EQ, editing on the voice etc) .. at the time that sounds ok .. it can be easily mixed into any musicbed Hope this was usefull Visit and listen @ BW ! frankallen
Hi Philippe, Thanks for playing around with it that sounds pretty amazing, Could i ask what kinda of eq adjustments you made to it and also the effects at the end would that be something simular to a following midtones echo ? i have so much to learn but its enjoyable doing so. Also and a matter of intrest what software are you useing ? GKIye
Hi Frank, I'm using all kinds of software, I'm an old adict to SoundForge (and still ) .. but mainly I use these days similar software as Cool Edit etc That type of software has lots of tools to adjust anything possible About the EQ .. thats an EQ who's at my favourit section, I made that one .. because it uplift the voice in general If you wanna hear the results of that EQ during a broadcast ... At this very moment my set is aired at my own project (from 08pm - 10pm CET) .. check out my voice and you gonna hear what I mean .. Just click on the icons at my signature .. the show is currently on air .. so check it out right now Visit and listen @ BW !

GKIye
Thanks for listening Frank sounds very goood love the tunes also If you like some examples of what can be done .. feel free to post some DRY liners of yourself ... content can be anything .. even stupid things .. so I mean with that that it doesn't have to be liners as used in general Speak some lines with your own voice .. no need to add any EQ or effect to your voice .. just completly DRY When I have some time left .. I'm gonna edit some things on your voice as example etc etc If you like this idea .. post your liner into this topic .. this way I don't have to search it elsewhere at BW LOL Take care Visit and listen @ BW !
