Brutish Sailor
The problem is they could be using a forged proxy....If they are, then banning them will do no good. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
fridaynightsmoke
I personally don't mind people ripping my show, even if they upload it to torrent sites etc, its more publicity isn't it? Although if you rely on web-based advertising to fund the station its obviously bad if people are listening and bypassing your site..
shoutcaststreaming
One of our customers has 300 slots and when we look at his statistics, they have about 90% of the listeners being streamrippers. We gave him a free server for a month or two, until he gets back on his feet. Most all of them are from Germany and are using WinAmp 2.7, which hasn't been used in years, except for streamripping. We asked the customer to run software to stop the rippers and he got irate with us. He is listed on iTunes and his donations are probably going to hell, as the real listeners can't get in as the server is always filled. And yes, the IP addresses are most always forged using some proxy. johny c
I get hit with stream rippers all the time. Because I use aac+ encoding they try for 2 seconds and drop off and then try again and again for about 10 times. I used to put them in the ban list, but now I dont bother because they just come back with another ip. Its a shame because it makes it hard to read your shoutcast log. Brutish Sailor
The other guy on our server (dedicated) wrote a NICE little script. Similar to Isorns RIP, except it works for Icecast2 and stays on the server rather than working through the browser. It actually keeps a database for all the different players. Theirs A LOT more to it than that (only ripper zaps guaranteed) but thats a different story. He will not allow me to release this publiclly, as the last thing anyone needs is finding an exploit on the software and trying to find a work around, but if any webhost want it, he will give it away. ALSO, Yes, I do care about streamrippers. I pay royalties through my LC JLA to SE,ASCAP,and BMI to stay legal. The last thing I need is a streamripper popping in on my stream, ripping music, popping out, not contributing to donations for bandwidth/royalties/server space/licensing. They dont care if my station lives or dies. my licensed station is charged royalties by ATH. So, if these stream rippers steal music from me, they are using that ATH I pay for as well, and giving me the shaft in returm. Half of them are bots trying to collect better quality songs so they can RESELL the music illegally, and turn a buck at my loss. HELL WITH THAT. The worst is rippers infusing BASS into older player coding (winamp 2.3) as that crap has more glitches to disrrupt my streaming than AOL. GKIye
Indeed most of them have German IPs but also from other countries .. however it looks that the source of all is coming from Russian streambots. Since 2008 these are not appearing anymore that often on streams based at The Netherlands and Belgium. So it looks that they are attacking currently other countries, also countries outside of Europe. Most all of them are from Germany to Fozzy : Attached you'll find 2 scripts aka streamrip banners : - one is a PHP script where you can edit into this section : $knownrippers = array ("Engelmann","Quintessential","Audion" all known streamrippers (by name) Notice that some wellknown mediaplayers do have into their basic settings a streamripper tool option. So if you add all known streamrippers you can create the opposite and loose "real" listeners ... Operational = adjust your IP, Port, shoutcast user and pass + the names of streamrippers > load the script into a seperated directory to your webspace > open your browser and let it "run" It only works if it is active at your browser, so you can run the PHP page during hours of the day where you have to many fakers - secondly is a PAL script who can be used if you run SAM .. it does in general the same as the first script Operational = adjust where needed and let it run Run it on sheduled times or 24/7 My experience is that most of those streambots are attacking streams between 04am-05am CET, 04pm-07pm CET and strange enough also during school holidays (such as Easter, XMas, Summer holiday etc etc) A third option is to set your shoutcast temporary as "private" and not as the default "public stream" .. Once your stream is set to private you gonna notice that in no time they gonna be gone. So I guess the attackers are using software who detects public streams in general Good Luck ! Once your stream is set to private you gonna notice that in no time they gonna be gone. The trouble with doing this is that you will also be de-listed in Shoutcast. Granted you will lose a lot of the rippers, but you will also lose real listeners if they can't find you. GKIye
Yep .. you're right .. for that reason I mentioned this as my "third" option .. if nothing else helps it can be an option "temporary" The trouble with doing this is that you will also be de-listed in Shoutcast. Granted you will lose a lot of the rippers, but you will also lose real listeners if they can't find you. A small question to you as streamprovider : Does the streambots problem appearce these days more often at the UK etc ? Because, as I wrote into my first reply, the "heavy" problems of those streamrippers are almost all stopped at The Netherlands and Belgium since mid-2008 Maybe they are focused to attack these days other countries ... What do you think ? Visit and listen @ BW !
johny c
Ive been having problems with them here in New Zealand for almost 2 years. I have gone private but they still manage to find me. GKIye
Hi Johny, I guess their proxy's do read the IP and Port of any public directory .. so not only shoutcast for example your signature shows also the IP Port .. so thats also a way to get the stream source if data is scanned by their software tools Visit and listen @ BW ! johny c
Yes thats why I have givin up trying to get rid of them. You cant hide anywhere if you want to advertise your station. Brutish Sailor
Once windows 7 gets released and the AAC+ revolution starts, it will be a beautiful thing. When you try to record a AAC+ stream using an MP3 recorder it comes out usually LIKE CRAP. Another nice thing about AAC+, very nice streamripping deterrent. Just a nice natural effect of the different encoders. of course those programs that integrate the "what-u-hear" feature I do believe might be uneffected.... You would figure that the BMI, Soundexchange, and ASCAP would promote its use via offering discounts to all those that stream AAC+ because of its anti-stream ripping features, but for some reason, they are just TOO busy trying to squeeze blood. johny c
Yeah but when using AAC+ it still goes in your shoutcast log as trying to connect , which make the log hard to read and with Win 7 they might be able to connect to AAC+ and rip the stream. Ive just set my shoutcast back to private and you should see all the ban ip's trying to connect. Brutish Sailor
Thats an easy solution. If they are using a bot to connect to your stream from your page.... It will Just connect to the first .pls file its offered. I wrote a nice little injector playlist for them I call "night night ripper" It feeds them 100 files of spoofing their IP ( via the FTP Self IP offered every entry). YEAH, REALLY gives the ripper programs a bad day. Just stick it in the html somewhere before the player herfs are offered. Give it a 1x1 pixel button so people wont click on it. I never used it, as my buddy came up with a better solution, but it will work. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
johny c
In the last hour since I went private I have had 20 shots to rip my stream from 7 different ip ad's which are in my ban list. I wonder how many tries they have with the same ip before changing to another. Brutish Sailor
another reason I like .asx files. If I had streamrippers pulling from .asx files, a few HTML views and HTML view would give them a VERY BAD DAY! Muah HAHA None of them would be target=_self either! MUAHAHAHAHA! Just redirect it to a resource hungry site and let their browser do the rest of the work....... KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
johny c
Looks like they never give up, just had 1 ip thats been in the ban list try 1 hour since the last try. johny c
But you cant realy use asx files with aac+ because they would always try to open in win media player which dosnt support aac+ in all players yet without the plugin and winamp wont open them. I offer 2 streams, 1 aac+ and the other with mp3 with an asx file. Brutish Sailor
But if its pulling 24/7 every hour, its a bot guarenteed. Bots dont think, they read in code.... Just make a playlist file for .asx, and include the following. I cant figure out why my banner doesnt work for WMP, but this will #($&* a rippers day. It will make all sorts of metadata rotate in the WMP window. Dead awaken Radio Dead Awaken Radio http://www.deadawakenradio.com property of DAR We are still alive... Dead Awaken Radio 128kbps My Dead awaken radio 32kbps No metadata will display in the player if they launch it in Winamp, so more deterrent for a BOT.
