James
I know digital radio is a hot topic at the moment but what are some peoples thoughts. Digital TV is a sure hit for its exceptional HD quality picture and sound, but do people really want a clear sound when they are driving to work or are they happy with what they hear and not the quality? Your thoughts?.. Studiio - All-In-One Radio Communication Platform SMS | Phone Calls | Social Media | Content
voodoohippie
I say in about 5-10 yrs you'll start to see stations broadcasting in both analog and Digital (HD Radio) and you'll start to see new cars equip with HD radio receivers. Newer high end Audio for homes aka Luxman, Harman Karman, Carver, Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo receivers will without a doubt be equip with HD Radio. By 2020 it will be manditory just like digital TV however the switch for HD Radio will be slower because you can't easily connect a converter or transverter to an existing car stereo or home Stereo. Many people won't want to fork out $200 to receive HD Radio on their home Stereo. It would be far easier to buy an external HD reciever and connect it to the AUX jack but keep in mind that not everyone at this time has a high end reciever. If you call a discount store reciever high end I pitty you. I only see Progressive Rock, Classic Music fans, and True old time Country and Western (not this country pop) fans fork out the dough. Progressive Rock fans have been waiting for a medium that plays deep tracks and more than the hits from their favorite artists. This is where HD Radio could shine if the corporate world will let it. Blazin 97
I think people do want to hear a clear sound, because when compared to Satellite Radio, terrestrial radio's quality doesn't sound that good.

undercover
I think and believe that radio broadcasted via the Internet. Example: niche stations will become very popular when Internet access is widely available in cars, radio, and everywhere else. I believe this because Internet radio content is programmed to certain niches and audiences specifically; which terrestrial radio is not. And the content can is unique at the same time. voodoohippie
Oh but you already can receive Internet Radio in your car. Its called getting a Blackberry Storm or Iphone and a flat rate data plan and a wireless FM transmitter like the Belkin which is cheap and available at Walmart Super stores. You can get a date plan with your Blackberry Storm for $89/Mo and its truly unlimited data. Flycast or Moodio.FM is FREE and both will even receive AAC+ audio (I know I do this to monitor The Legacy while away from home). I remind my listeners all the time. It won't be long till real Progressive and Classic Rock fans ditch satellite and terrestrial Radio for a Blackberry Storm and a wireless transmitter just so that they can get out of the shackles of corporate Radio. Yess they'll definitely be a real war waged between independent Radio such as The Legacy and corporate Radio full of repeat frogs and no real creativity at all as far as the artists played. drewpine
I have an HD radio in my car, love the 24/7 blues channel that's in my area (no commercials, but owned and operated by Entercom), but I mostly stream my internet station from my iPhone so I don't really use it. There is a very clear sound quality improvement with an HD radio too.
voodoohippie
I've heard from friends that the digital HD signal has a lessor distance compaired with the analogue FM signal. In some metro areas you can receive a station for more than 50-60 square miles. But friends have told me that the HD signal was only 20-30 square miles. Fine if your not a heavy traveler and maybe live right in Virginia Beach right in town. But in Elizabeth City,NC I bet I'd not be able to receive HD. BTW here I can receive fair quality Radio as far as variety goes for Rock fans. We can receive The Shark which plays a mix of oldies, Classic hits and some pop. We get The Fox which plays Classic Rock, 100.5 which plays New Rock, 93.7 Bob FM which is sort of mixed. The reason I broadcast my Internet station is for those outside of good areas like where I use to live in Lansing Mich. Boy was that Radio Hell for a Prog Rock fan. I've been told more cities have wiped out their classic Rock stations too. Sounds like regular Radio in some areas has gone kids Radio. wildun
For the record, internet radios are already available from some car manufacturers as an add on option
HDRadioFarce
Conversions to HD have stalled at about 1,750, almost all from the HD Radio Alliance broadcasters. Some HD broadcasters have actually turned off HD, as it jams adjacent broadcasters, and there is no ROI. Electrical bills are at least doubled, and there are on-going fees to iNquity. Most HD broadcasters will not be able to increase FM-HD power due to lack of headroom and funds for complete transmitter rebuilds. There is really too much to list, so you are welcome to visit my blog, or Bob Savage's website at stopiboc. Sales of HD radios have been amemic.
