fridaynightsmoke
I've been using a Behringer C1 (condenser) mic, plugged into a Behringer Xenyx 1204FX, since I started last year. Up to now, this setup has worked OK (considering the mic was £30!), however the mic always had a just-noticeable level of background noise, and it also picks up anything else going on in the room and even outside. A few weeks ago, the mic developed an intermittent fault whereby there is sometimes substantial noise (white noise, by the sound of it) coming from it, noticeable enough even on an mp3 stream to be unacceptable in my book. I opened up the mic to have a look (I have an electronics background) and while I couldn't see any obvious fault (it was only a quick look see) I was unimpressed with the internal build quality anyway. Getting to the point, I am considering getting a Rode Procaster (£117 here) after reading some good things on here about that particular mic, and good things in general about using dynamics for their rejection of ambient noise. What I want to know is does the 1204FX have enough gain on its mic preamps to feed the mic directly to it, or do I really need to buy a seperate mic amp? On the highest gain settings (probably the last 1/8 or 1/16 of the knob sweep) the thing hisses like a snake :(. With the current economic situation, if changing mics is going to involve heavy pennies I might as well leave things as they are for a while (because I'd rather wait to buy a 'good' setup rather than throwing good money after bad on poor quality gear). What do you reckon?

What do you reckon? First Off, That's a Great Deal on the Mic, I agree with you on waiting, It sounds like a smart move, but you do need something. Some thing's you may want to consider: 1: Ebay, It may work out for you, Another great deal on another great Mic. 2: Do you Think the company your going to buy from is good? If the Price's Are high now, When the economy get's better, Do you think the price will go higher? "What do you reckon" ... You remind me of wildun there. I Reckon when you get a deal like that you stock up
