What is the minimal equipment for voice overs?

I met this guy at a voice over seminar who has an amazing voice for the radio. He taught a class and showed us the mic he used, I didn't catch the model, but it was a USB/Firewire mic. He said, thats all you really need!!! I want to know if this is really true. I mean, with my experience, all the USB mics I have had, had alot of noise, and didn't come out clear. What do you guys think the minimal requirement for a professional voice over artist is?

Personally, I have:

Mics: Rode Procaster, SHURE SM7B, Rode NT1A and a few cheap mics.

Mixer: Mackie 1604VLZ3 (my new one) and Behringer Eurorack MX2004A (old one)

Preamp: Presonus DIGIMAX D8 - 8 Channels

Software: Sony Sound forge 9, Cool Edit Pro & of course, Adobe Audition.

Computer: HP - 4 GB Ram, 2TB HD, Windows XP

Audio Interface: Fast Track PRO

I was told, I over bought. I disagree, I think you really need a professional set up to really provide quality work. Now, take Don LaFontaine for instance, he could speak in a $2 pc mic and it would still sound great! But, still....lol

What do you guys think?

Its the same with all recording gear.

You can have all the latest toys and not know how to use them and of course everything would sound like S**t. Cheap gear in the hands of a pro and its still magic. It comes down to how you play with the toys. I went into a home studio once and the guy there had an 8 track reel to reel and all his recordings sound like crap. I just about cried when I saw his gear and he didnt have a clue how to use it. He was trying to eq and get volumes as he recorded and he didnt know that you could mix as it came back off the tape. Ive never had a usb mic so I cant comment, but I do use usb and firewire audio interfaces with no problems. Lol I need the toys to make me sound 1/8 as good as the pro's.

I have to say the main thing you need is a good voice and any mic over $100 really. The rest you can achieve with software.

I still prefer the old way of doing things, use the best mic, best mixer, best everything you can afford.

But Rick wakeman on a cheap $30 keyboard sounds amazing. Put me on the best keyboard in the world and it sounds like sh!t.

As long as the mic can pick up reasonaby well, the rest is easy these days.

Well, in my college classes, they are teaching really weird ways to record with a condenser. The teacher is new this year, and he is not suitable for the job!!! He said that the sweet spot to a condenser is 2 inches away!!!! SO WRONG!!!! Maybe for a dynamic.....but all my condensers are in my vocal booth (closet with carpeting & pads) and are head length and at least a foot or two away from my face! I get MUCH better results this way. I found that I like my RODE NT1A the best out of what I have now....Eventually I want to get a Neuman.....
