johny c
Can someone that does stream hosting please clear my mind. When you use a stream host are constantly uploading a stream from your home server to the stream hosting server or does it only start uploading when someone wants the stream? It seems to me if you are constantly uploading from home even if no one is taking a stream from the streaming host, that would add up to a lot data for a month which could max out your own data cap. If you are uploading at about 28kb would that almost add up to just over 18 gig a month or have I done my math wrong. James
This is kind of off topic but i am suprised i havent seen many Aussie Webcasters out there! Most internet providers in Australia do not count uploads in their usage which is SUCH a bonus because we dont have to pay much to the internet companies to broadcast as much as we want! Im not sure if providers outside Australia count uploads or not but WHY is there not a massive amount of people webcasting? It beats me.. Anyway.. A stream host simply hosts your data, you are uploading a consistant stream of data to the host, a listener is downloading from the host. Nothing stops uploading unless you physically stop it. If you are worried about your internet usage and data affordability, either reduce your bitrate or do some serious maths on how you can get the maximum amount of webcasting from your data allowance If you need help, just give us a shout. I am pretty handy when it comes to internet providers and getting a cheap deal with huge data allowance. Right now im paying AU $29.95 for 30GB of data with uploads not counted. ;) Studiio - All-In-One Radio Communication Platform SMS | Phone Calls | Social Media | Content
johny c
Thanks James, I thought that was the story. Im with Vodafone and I have a cap of 20 gig a month. Thats up & down total. The catch is Im only aloud to do 2 gig a day or Im down to 60k for the next day. If I use the 20 gig Im down to 60k untill the billing month is up. Yeap Im know that sucks. I pay $60NZ a month with a free static ip and free web space for my web page. We are still ripped off here in NZ for broadband RAG-FM 107.7 Raglan New Zealand & ragfm.com ........"Top Music Top of the Dial" Click HERE to listen to the RAG-FM radio stream
citrus3
Yes I have heard about Aussie rules when it comes to bandwidth wether it comes down to home broadband or cellular internet. I heard it is rare to find a provider who actually provides unlimited internet use for home users which is a terrible scenario for any web-caster. And the 30Gig you mention I dont believe is suitable for running a stream 24 hours a day on 128KBPS. You would surely need to do other transfers down your data pipe such as downloading new music etc.... For a stream host like us we buy the bandwidth in large quantities or buy unlimited services whereby we can then sell lots of small chunks to clients and not have to worry about using up our limits. Hope that helps Citrus 3 Shoutcast Hosting
