Hi there,

I just found this forum through Google. I am a Mac user and like to add "MegaSeg Pro" (www.megaseg.com) to the list - if it has not already been mentioned somewhere else. I use Megaseg as Player and Mic-Control-SW for my shows on www.secondradio.de. MegaSeg has quite advanced playlist automation functions, including rules and things. Unfortuntely it does not have a broadcast server, like Shoutcast or Icecast. But on Mac the shareware "Nicecast" as individual software solution is THE standard. Rock solid and very versatile - it allows access to all the VST and AU sound plugins you might have. Actually Mac OSX offers quite a lot of reasonable quality plug-ins, like multiband compressors, all kinds of EQs, side chain compressors, etc.. as part of the standard installation. This is a widely unknown feature set of OSX. I also have some professional sound plugins, which I use for music production. Also these are fully accessible by Nicecast and can be integrated in the audio process chain. SecondRadio.de uses the web-based "CentovaCast" for AutoDJ and scheduled broadcasts, when nobody is live on air. Therefore we don't need MegaSeg's versatile scheduling functions. But they are all there, which makes the big difference to the typical DJ players available out there. My complete setup runs on a Mac Mini driving two displays, one for MegaSeg, the other one for Nicecast, the Focusrite Saffire Mixer control and the Nicecast plug-ins. The picture below shows my colleague Sachse during a live broadcast from the "RezzDays 2011" in Berlin, Germany's biggest community event for virtual worlds.

For this event we used my Mac setup instead the SAM installations most other mods in SecondRadio use, as my setup is most versatile and works flawless. MegaSeg is not for free, it is even not cheap, but costs less than SAM and is really worth the money, I must say. SAM has an extraordinary set of features. But honestly, the best is to switch off all sound plug ins right from the beginning. This massively improves the sound! ;-) Of course you can use one or the other with very careful settings, but the defaults just sound terrible to my ears. On the other hand even the standard plug-in set provided with Mac OSX sounds quite OK. The combination of Megaseg Pro and Nicecast for me is the Mac alternative to Windows-only SAM.

I am happy to share my experience with MegaSeg and Nicecast with you, if anybody is interested.

Regards

Rush

for the best automation software it was a big clue for me, i tried several programs so i came out with a little experince on that, i've been using sam broadcaster since ever but i got bored from it cause everything in it must be programmed throug the firebird data base or MySQL, that was a big issue especially when you manage to stream advertisements so you must be attenention to what's automatically be streamed based upon the code you made, so i had to look for a substitute, i've found to popular programs which are BSI SIMIAN and Jazzler, jazzler is the most handy program upon all, it categorize everything as u wish from the music u want to broadcast to jingle, spots, ads and even voice tracks, it's automation program is the best of all very handy as i said, but i came to a problem wich the timing of the breaks wich is programed only to come every 30 minutes so u cann't stream ads automatically in a specified time if you want, so i came to SIMIAN which is a big clue for me till now, i always search for the best program but until now i couldn't reach to a final answer. any ideas for the best popular one which is used by the most FM Stations world wide?

I am a fan of Radio DJ http://www.radiodj.ro I find it has all the features I need, works really well, however the latest version does not support the Shoutcast DSP plugin but it works well using Edcast alongside it, apparently the next version of Radio DJ to be released will support plugins and will also contain voice tracking

I think the Voice track feature i think has been put on hold while marius smooths out some other problems. As for The Plugin feature will be Interesting to see how that Pans out, I'd love to see if someone can write a streaming Plugin when it's released.

RadioDJ as whole is a great Program and i have very few headaches with it, Unlike other Paid for software i could mention.

Its a pity the voice tracking will not be ready yet, even if it you could just drop mp3 files straight into the playlist without having to import them first it would be a useful way of recording links.

The problem with shoutcast is how often the plugin crashes, if someone can make a stable version it would be fantastic.

I think what a lot of people need to cover when reviewing software here is specifically pros and cons and features they may have over others.

Case in point: As much as I love SAM, I have been looking off and on for suitable replacements that still do what I need. Unfortunately there are a couple key features that SAM does well which I have not been able to find in other automation software yet. These would be the built in PAL scripting engine which gives you virtually unlimited choices on HOW to automate your station to the tiniest detail. Second is the deeply ingrained use of a database for 98% of functionality combined with a good starter 'website' that allows you to put a lot of automated content on your website for your listeners that ties right into the automation.

As far as I have been able to determine across a wide swath of software I have looked at up to now, none offer these key features or at best do so as a dumbed down afterthought.

Yes I'd like to see pros and cons and add to that screen shots on how it looks. Seriously, if you have to stare at something hours on end it's got to be appealing to the eye. Design and functionality all the way.

Please check out www.nextkast.com and tell me your thoughts on it. The software is very easy to use and does not use any complicated database system. There is also a tutorial video on the site to help get you started

By the way I am automating my station with it, at www.saDanceRadio.com

Thanks

Maybe the admin could look through the 13 pages of comments and edit the first post to reflect any other software users have suggested? takes ages to go through every page lol

This is the program we've been using at our station-- and I like it quite a bit. I wish it had more features, but we're using the free version and my boss only recently stopped using Jazler, so this seems to work fine for us. I definitely recommend it as a useful start-up program.
