Ok Guys... here is the demo

First part is with my old Samson 3cpo (hehe), :voiceover:via usb connection... The second is with my new mic,:voiceover: (Harlan Hogan), via an m-box connection, recorded on protools 8.1 (now if I can actually figure out how to edit properly in that I will be sweet!

So...what do you guys think?

I am very excited about the difference myself.. wow!

I think it is richer, fuller... and more rounded... less tinny sounding.

Thanks for the input guys... :kiss:I love the richness of the sound. What a difference!

Yeah you are right about the P's johny, I am aware of it, however... I rushed the recording cause I just wanted to hear the sound, and I am still working on correct placement etc :)

Oh, what an amazing difference! That's an amazing mic I have to say. Samson sounds thinner than your new mic. In the second clip you sound more full in the lower frequencies and the clarity is much improved. Top end isn't harsh, it's pretty good! Also the background noise isn't so big anymore. Samson captured it little bit IMO.

Enjoy your mic M! :biggrinthumb:

Yeah a huge difference Joonas. I am really pleased with it.... and it was a very reasonable price...

I have my mic in a portable whisper booth in hubby's ex-closet and you are right. The samson still picked up a lot of noise that this one cuts out.

The only issue with this one, that I can see.... is what Johny pointed out.. the 'p's. Even with a pop screen in front it still picks them up... So I am experimenting with side placement today see if that makes a difference.

And of course, there is the getting used to using headphones. I have never used them before, except when I was recording in the recording studio for the diabetes ad.

Very exciting, and it was all paid for from money I earned from the above ad... we couldn't afford it otherwise. :D

PS... is that a new pic Joonas?

Hey M,

Try and angle your mic either towards ->/ or >\ away from you and maybe try talking over it or below it to reduce the popping Just an idea that might work for you

Morning Frank... ah a man after my own heart... I was going to play around with the mic angling today. Talking below it.. now that is an idea!

Let me have a fiddle with it when hubby wakes up (Chemo makes him very tired), and I will upload some done different ways... perhaps you guys would be so kind as to tell me which works best? I value all your opinions!

Cheers

M.

It takes a bit to find the sweet spot for your mic. When Im on-air I have my mike above me and off to the side with only the foam wind filter. I can get pretty loud when Im in full swing on-air . I dont get any pop's but you do hear me taking a breath lol. I use headphones all the time when Im on-air. For that I use a behringer C-3 mic. When I do my production work I have my other mic, that I do have right in front of me with a screen pop filter this time and I dont use headphones. When Im doing production work, its more controlled then when Im on-air lol. If I dont like the take I can go and do it again. I used to wear headphones all the time when I did production work, but now that Ive found the sweet spot for my mic, I dont.Wearing headphones does help you find the best spot. You can see a good video here
I dont have the same mic, but I do have the same mic boom lol.

Hi Marianne,

Could you possibly re-record them both at a full 320kbps bit rate?

They both have the mp3 "metallic" artifacts in them?

Now, I am guessing this is because you are certainly using some sort of noise reduction in your recording.

That leads me to another thing. There are definate clicks at the ends and beginning of lots of words, this seems to be where some sort of noise gate is kicking in a little harshly?

I measure the noise levels, albeit very impressive at -90dB 1st, and -131dB in the second take, you don't need it be be that good, and it may be the cause of the clicking.

The second mic sounds fuller, but that "metallic" sound just isn't right!

By the way- my signal to noise is only about 60dB, I can make it better if I turn of my hardware compressor, but the overall sound is less hard hitting.

As for the pops, you'll have to learn a new technique to match the mic. That can take a few days, or even weeks to conciously master it. I always talk at 45 degrees across the mic. Others have different techniques.

Oh, can you record with the noise gate turned off?

What software do you use?

If I have helped you with a Freebie- please be kind enough to add a link from your own site or blog to mine- thanks! http://arthurburton.net

Thank You!

Hi Marianne,

Could you possibly re-record them both at a full 320kbps bit rate? Umm.. not sure about that one? Cause it was the first time I used protools... took me ages to figure out how to even turn it on... and I have never used an interface before.. the samson was a usb plug in

They both have the mp3 "metallic" artifacts in them?

Now, I am guessing this is because you are certainly using some sort of noise reduction in your recording. Oh gosh... see, this is where my lack of technical knowledge really hits me... :( Are you referring to during the recording, or during editing?

That leads me to another thing. There are definate clicks at the ends and beginning of lots of words, this seems to be where some sort of noise gate is kicking in a little harshly?

I measure the noise levels, albeit very impressive at -90dB 1st, and -131dB in the second take, you don't need it be be that good, and it may be the cause of the clicking. So how do I alter that? You will have to explain it to me like you are explaining it to a 12 year old... cause my technical knowledge is not at all there...I am totally self-taught (no money to take classes) in the tech dept. Voice wise I had training all through my youth.

The second mic sounds fuller, but that "metallic" sound just isn't right! Wonder what is causing the metallic sound.. could it be like the heating system? Oh... or perhaps the fridge in the other room? Although the mic is in a portabooth surrounded by acoustic foam, so it shouldn't be that?

By the way- my signal to noise is only about 60dB, I can make it better if I turn of my hardware compressor, but the overall sound is less hard hitting. Lost me totally! :(

As for the pops, you'll have to learn a new technique to match the mic. That can take a few days, or even weeks to conciously master it. I always talk at 45 degrees across the mic. Others have different techniques. yeah.. that is just a practice thing with this mic, I am sure it won't take too long to sort it out.. in the meantime I can always use the finger in front of the lips trick!

Oh, can you record with the noise gate turned off? ummm what is the noise gate? (see told you I was tech challenged..)

What software do you use? I have audacity, adobe audition - although I can't record using it, cause the sound card on my pc is crap and adobe won't recognize it... and now Pro-tools 8.1 which is going to take me ages to figure out just the basics of recording with it.

And actually, that brings up another point that I noticed... in a later recording. my voice sounded quavery (for want of a better word), and I know it didn't come out of the pipes like that... had me baffled last night. Hubby couldn't hear it, but I could.

I am so glad that I can ask you technical whizzes here about this stuff and I know you won't laugh at my lack of knowledge...

Hey ask me anything about heart surgery (or most nursing/medical related stuff), or voice work.. and I am a fountain of knowledge, but electronic technical stuff.. :(

You know what Marianne, there are reams and reams and reams of ol' cobblers printed on how to do Voiceovers, web sites, books- people forver pontificating in forums and the like.

My advice to ANYONE and EVERYONE, if you want to be good at Voiceovers, you really must learn to LISTEN!

There is listennig....and there is LISTENING!

They are two differernt things!

You are doing the right thing for sure! The quavering effect CAN be caused by a lack of level to move the diaghphram sufficientl. That means the diaghpragmn isn't being energised quite enough to "move it" sufficently!

A bit like the space rocket not moving enough to get free of the earths gravuitational pull, and it gets sucked back in! Maybe not the best analogy, but hopefully gets the point across!

On the other hand, it could be a computer/software issue... that is another thing altogether, maybe the sound card/processor has some strange effect on the recording?

Hey, you ain't got a tremelo box plugged in-line have ya? ;-) LOL!!!

No.. it is not from me... I think it is a software issue. Hubby can't hear it, but I certainly can.

Can you pick it up? To me it is more noticeable in the second take

Or maybe I need a hearing aid to go with the bifocals and lack of teeth.. :D

I notice two possibly, 1st take the word "radio" 1st take.... but probably not!

It's more like a change in your vocals towards the end of the word.

But much more likely in the word "earned" 2nd take- that wobbles a bit!

More likely to be vocal, I would guess!

I drive my wife nuts maning about having to wear glasses for reading, I ain't getting my usual high score in pinball is the really annoying thing!!!

well, you could be right.. perhaps it is simply that the new mic and the preamp pick up all the things that were not so noticeable previously. Well, this is definitely going to be a fun relearning curve for me. :) Cheers Mate!

PS... how is that thingy for your mate coming along?
