Hi Folks,

I thought I'd give voice overs a try. I think I have a raspy type voice, so it won't fit a lot of dry reads etc.. But I think it'll work for some request. That I can use for practice to gain more experience.

I'm using a USB plug-in mic and Audacity for editing. Nothing fancy at this time, thought I'd see how making free request would workout. Before I go out and start buying higher end equipment.

I used one of the free VO request for this demo.

demo1.mp3 – (Dry) I only removed some noise.

demo2.mp3 – I did some editing to the voice and added background FX's

So let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Bill

Hey Bill,

In my opinion over all pretty good Just a couple of pointers for you though.

1, Practice your scripts you sound a little robotic your voice should Flow. It will come in time though. :)

2, For me your levels could be a little higher .

3, The Produced Version pretty good but your effects over power your voice thus making it difficult to hear what you are saying, Play around with your levels and find the perfect balance.

Nothing to harsh just good friendly advice Keep working on it you will get there

Cheers

Frank

Actually Frank gives good advice... It is all practice really.. There are some really great places on the web where you can get scripts to practice on.

I really like your voice and I could see where it could really get used. I like that 'raw' sort of tone that it has.

Hi Bill,

Honestly ... it sounds as a voice of outer space used during Star Trek, it sounds robotic (quote of frank) but it sounds also very alien

This is my general review :

- volume of sound is way to low

- you have to boost your mic volume and if not, your recording volume

- the complete line is chopped what results into that robotic way of speaking

- before you start speaking fill your lungs with air, get used to a specific tempo of speaking

- at first sight, I guess your voice isn't usefull to make real uptempo shouts, however your voice can give more if used as a smooth sound, maybe a little bit soul ... a little funky

I can hear your voice as trailer voice ... Are you not sure about that ?

Take a listen to the attached files ...

- I made an uplift of your voice including some small effects

- and you'll find 2 produced fillers who includes your voice

I hope you gonna like the attached files, its an idea how it "can" sound if you use the right volume and mic settings

and I hope you gonna like the result of "your" voice ... afterall your voice has lots of potential ...

Enjoy !

Thanks Bill,

Glad you liked it :)

I use in general Cool Edit aka Adobe Audition

details see : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Audition

They sound great, you sure thats me? LOL.......

YES ... IT IS YOU :D

In fact you have a great voice ... somewhere your voice reminds Me to an other voice ... Listen to the used beds, and try to figure out what voice I mean

With the right mic, the right flow and right software (to record and / or to edit) you are able to deliver more than you are aware of

One advice = don't go "to" fast with your voice, talk smoothly, keep your natural voice, adjust the distance of your mouth to your mic, play around with your voice (styles can be : natural, creepy, real low, announcer etc) and make several short liners

If you have any other new and "better" demos :) feel free to upload them to this topic

Make some demos with the right software - example download a trial version before buying - and play around ... You gonna be amazed of the results !

GK added some extra punch to your voice. I agree with the rest in that practice always makes perfect. Using your post production capabilities will be helpful.

As far as constructive criticism is concerned I would suggest that you work at finding a place of comfort in your read. This sounds forced and a bit jilted. In a perfect world this would need to come across smooth and silk - even if raspy (a great effect by the way).

Does this mean there is no hope? Not at all. In fact you're off to a great start. Just dial it down a couple of notches and find a place where you can read without force and you will likely see a remarkable improvement.

Also, a better mic would also help showcase your talent better.

:) Kiwi, I think I'll need help too get that far with my voice.

Right now I look at it this way, we all got to start someplace. So doing the free request is a good starting point. I think it will help me over all. It may or may not lead to paid voice overs, only time will tell.

If any BW member thinks I can be of any help, let me know. I will do what I can too help. But as of right now I'll read, you edit. :)

hahaha.. yes, a ways to go. But you have that potential I believe. It is the tone of your voice. Just remember the 3 p's

Practice.... practice... practice!

Hahahaha Ive always called it the rule of P

Proper Preparation prevents piss poor performance LOL

Frank,

That gets right to the point and it fits everything. Having worked in the building trades for years. I always told everyone.

"If you do it right the first time. You won't need to do it again." So take your time and do it the right the first time!

This demo is about the Bermuda Triangle.

When I was recording and editing this, I thought. What would get me too listen to it and this is what I came up with.

I did change the tempo to make different parts stand out. I also tried different settings.

Bill

** Added: Forgot to add the dry read with the different setting and tempo.**

Hi Bill,

First of all ... Try to keep your voice caracter as into the last part where you say "The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle"

If the liner should be done completly with that type of voice you can have a "hit"

I guess also that this type of voice is nearest to your own natural voice

This demo is about the Bermuda Triangle.

I made a small production on it ... it ain't 100% .. its an example

An advice can be : don't make EQ or ambient settings to your own voice, thats something who can be done during the insert to a produced file

Hope you like this small result :)
