The fifth survey of the internet radio audience conducted by RAJAR has revealed that one third of the UK’s adult population has listened to radio online.

The survey, based on almost a thousand respondents, reveals that 17.4 million people claim to listen online, that’s up from 16.9 million in May this year.

I just talked to a friend of mine who works for a local CBS affiliate commercial FM station here in Baltimore. He likes to attend all these conventions about radio and whatnot. He just recently told me that there is talk about in the next 5 years to start transfering to streaming radio rather than traditional FM. What do you think that means for us hobby/low budget broadcasters? He went on to say, the FCC would most likely take control of US TOO!!!!! I say...no way will they control us internet broadcasters too!

First of all I don't think the FCC can take control of the Internet. At least I hope not. If the big boys make the move to streaming will they have to start paying the same royalties we do? Right now they aren't affected by the new rulings, but if they make the move, it will either cost them millions more in payments or they will have to lobby to reduce the fees. :)

Any thoughts on this?

Well, I've been looking into it and they cannot control the internet however they CAN control the stations that work with the new included internet radio receivers in future cars. I have a friend who drives a FORD SUV and it has internet radio built in. The only stations it actually gets are CBS stations and AOL!!!!!!! So, even though its internet radio...its still not the same :/

Therefore, they can't control what we say or do for the most part, but they can control our potential to rise! Oh well, theres always tuning in from smart phones ;)

I have an idea. Why don't we start our own survey. I have survey software I can setup in a sub-domain. There is so much variety on BW that we could get everyone to promote it and come up with our own real statistics.

I would probably need one of the board Moderators to help me a little on the admin side and keeping track of the survey results though. We could post the results on BW for everyone to see.

Any feedback?

Hi Wes and Jon,

Didn't had James an idea to start an own BW mediaplayer, free for download ?

If so the idea of Wes could be managed as an overall BW stats survey

I don't know if people are interested in stats from station A, B or C etc etc (if those stations are non-commercial or hobby stations)

But those results could give a Monthly and Annual total overview of "all" stations ...

What means that BW as platform could tell 3rd parties, etc etc that BW related stations reach an xxxxxx amount of listeners

its just an idea aka my 2 (euro)cents :D

I'll get some details together and PM James later this evening or tomorrow. I'm going to try and setup the software so he will have something to see. This needs to be a project with everyones input. You guys are great, thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Wes,

I'm covering your back :) lol

A basic idea could be : (Monthly, every 3 Months etc etc)

- an average total of all stations ex : 759/1500 listeners

- the most common countries who are tuned in ex : top 10 or more

- a procentual rating of the used bitrates by listeners at stations

ex : 64kbps = 35,9% - 96kbps = 14,8% - 128kbps = 37,5% etc etc

(most interesting to see what bitrate is prefered by the average listener)

Honestly ... I don't have a clue about "technics" and software itself to make this possible ... its only some brainstorming :D

Yes, we can do that as a survey of current broadcasters. The software I use will create graphs and statistics.

We can also do a listener survey that the broadcasters can use on their websites.

I have spent the past week going through the software again. It's been almost 2 years since I used it. lol

I will try and put together a sample survey for you to view this weekend and post a link on Monday or Tuesday. I will also invite James to come have a look.
