sferau
So I've been tossing up for a while whether or not to ask for critique - and now I've given in. Here we go - I'm in no way a professional, I don't think my voice is that great... but, after all, that's why I'm asking you for your opinion. Thanks! JBVoice
Hey, I think you have a great voice for voice overs. With some practice and some minor training/coaching, you should be great! Only thing I have to say is you'd have to play with levels a bit more and speak a little clearer, but other than that, I think it sounded great. Keep up the good work. -JB Jon Bova "Successful people have libraries. The rest have big screen TVs. - Jim Rohn"
GKIye
Hello, First of all Welcome to BW ! Your voice sounds great, but you have to manage your "S" sound ... into most of the parts it sounds as Sss General review : - all of your demos are very long (1 minute and longer) - the tempo of reading / speaking is ok to Me - compaired to the content of your demos - manage the volume of your musicbed to one level ... currently you have into the music to much ups and downs - manage the start and end of your musicbed ... currently the produced files are looking as un-finished In general you have the skills, I guess you are in need to give these some more practice I think you are making your demos straight with a mixer (?) Try to insert your reads (DRY liners), musicbed, effects to some editing software (Adobe or other) ... that way you gonna achieve a way better result Hope this was helpfull Visit and listen @ BW ! sferau
Wow, thanks for the great feedback! For some reason I think my voice sounds too - I don't really know how to describe it, really... The Youth Radio promotion was produced by someone else, if I were them I wouldn't have put the levels up quite so high, and the Coaster Intro was live - taken from the station's audio logger (it tends to compress a bit too much)... I would have created some actual demos for the purpose of just being demos, but I haven't been able to make it out to the studio the past few days, so I just uploaded a couple of files so I could get a couple of tips... once again, thanks! GKIye
Are you from the UK ? For reason that your way of pronouncing the reads sounds very British to Me Feel free to upload some cuts produced by you ... both DRY reads and mixdowns Keep up the good work ! sferau
Nah, I'm from Australia - probably why I sometimes struggle with pronunciation (eg. Should be communiTy instead of communidy, twenTy-five instead of twenny-five) - I'm still getting used to switching into "pronounce-everything-properly" mode
GKIye
hmm strange ... Australian ? To Me as European your voice sounds close to an UK voice ... Maybe the Parents of your Mother or Father do have UK roots ... into a 2nd or 3rd generation it can happen that specific basic language elements gets copied to the youngest generation Anyway I don't have critiques to your pronunciation itself ... in fact I like the color of your voice but as JB said ... speaking with a clear voice looks to Me important to solve already the "S" problem Visit and listen @ BW ! billh
sferau, If your doing a voice over and you say it like your excited about "twenty-five". To me thats the correct way of saying it. At least for me this is what I think. Excited: “You can save TwenTy-Five percent if you join now” Not excited: “You can save twen-e-five percent if you join now” I think saying it like twen-te gives it that little pop you may be looking for. But it all depends on how your using it also. You can say it 3 ways. 1: twen-te 2: twen-e 3: twun-e All part of learning how to do voice overs. I made a quick demo using the 2 examples above on how they might sound.. **Note to arfa and GK : Your training is working, I'm learning lol.... ** "I'm Retired" Donations PayPal.Me/artistview . I only do dry reads, if you want FX's you'll have to add them, I might add them. sferau
but as JB said ... speaking with a clear voice looks to Me important to solve already the "S" problem What's the "S" problem? I'm not that good at listening for those kind of things... is it when I continue the sound of the "S" for too long? Also, thanks for the tip, billh! That will (hopefully) stop me from not pronouncing every sound when I'm doing a voiceover
GKIye
Check your demo on top of your list If you listen with an MP3 mediaplayer who's having average settings you gonna notice the "strong S" sound In general this can be part of the "sparkle" into a dry liner, however compaired with the other parts of your demos, this ain't the sparkle to your voice ... I guess you have already a strong natural "TH" and "S" prononciation, and I guess you are using a "treble" (hights) setting who is having a setting that is to high compaired to the mid and base settings at your mic channel of your mixer. Check your gear, and try to make some new DRY liners What's the "S" problem? I'm not that good at listening for those kind of things... Visit and listen @ BW ! sferau
Aah, I hear it now - is it the same sort of thing that happens with the "t"? That particular promo was recorded in a studio at my station (the same I used to record render1 and promo1) - I recorded the Coaster Intro in the other studio, I think there's a little difference between the recordings... Also, I'd adjust the treble/bass, but the mixer is just one of the basic hard-wired ones. Once I get enough cash up I'm planning on creating my own studio at home... but that could take some time! kiwiborn
Yeah I hear that aussie accent.. hehe. Fact is, I agree with Jobo. I really like your voice, I feel you actually have great potential, however; you really do need to get some diction help and breathing correctly so you do not sound out of breath. Mate, I can actually see you doing very well for yourself, with a little training and some practice. A+ effort for an Aussie hehe (just teasing)
frankallen
Hey There, I kinda like it, it catches my ear and i wanna listen. sferau
Thanks so much for the feedback! I've left the station I was with (had a LOT of issues in the committee, a lot of negative people) and I'm now pursuing my own independent thing (see http://forums.broadcastingworld.net/showthread.php?p=35008#post35008)
johny c
I was Station Manager for a volunteer community radio station and it was nothing but stress working with committees and such. The committees tend to end out being people that don't have a clue with what goes on to run a station. I left and now run my own station. I'm still not making any money but I now can sleep at night lol. The funny thing is I still do their production work for them and now they have to pay me for it.:yes:Sorry I went off topic a bit. It was just to reasure you that you have done the right thing in leaving. johny c
sferau it all takes time and you will build up the listeners in number once the word starts getting around. Just don't have your hopes on making much or any money at the moment, enjoying what you are doing is the best thing for now. A lot of the big boys are not making as much as they would like either. If some money does start coming, great!
