Streaming a radio station

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

Just found this site tonight and must say I'm quite impressed by the range of forums on here, it seems almost all radio options are covered!

A little background about me - I work as a casual on-air staff member for a small radio station in the South Island of NZ. I've always wanted to stream it online so people outside of the country can tune in.

A few questions I've got: how hard is it to setup, what's the startup costs, what equipment is required, and what are the ongoing costs?

Thanks :)

Hi there The Edge!

So you broadcast on the FM band? Well if you set up your computers audio output to the shoutcast module, you could easily do it.

Firstly, you have the option of setting up your own server (Difficult). Or you can choose a Stream Host to set it up for you at a flexible and affordable rate. I suggest looking here at reviews and uptime to get the best overview.

Secondly, once you have bought a server. You must download SHOUTcast in order to send audio to stream. Follow the details on how to download it for your operating system and how to set it up here.. http://shoutcast.com/download

Im sure another member can go into more detail to help you out. But thats just a small basic guide to start you off. Remember we are here if you get stuck or need some help!

Good luck :)

Hi, sorry this took so long to reply to. My computer died :(

Yes we broadcast on the FM band. Rather not say who I work for at the moment, as I'm not finding this out officially on their behalf, more just trying to get an idea of what's involved.

Cheers for the links, will take a look :)

Does that sort of thing apply in NZ tho? I guess I'm basically looking into just re-broadcasting our FM signal over the internet, and I think we already pay royalties.

Look into it m8 .Did you say your a local FM station if so then i think you will need royalty coverage to play it over the internet. Coz then your playing to the world the more that tune in the more you pay think thats the way it works im sure it is but look it up m8...

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

To give you an idea, here's what I'm thinking of doing (if I've got any of this wrong or it simply won't work, let me know):

Connect a 3.5mm cable to the headphone jack of an FM stereo radio to the Line-In jack on a computer; (somehow) stream the input of this - probably over a DSL connection; upload it to some streaming place (how much data does this uploading typically use per hour? per day? per month?); and have them rebroadcast it over the internet for anyone to listen into either by entering an IP address or clicking a link on the website, etc.

Would that work?

Never tryed it m8 but dont think it will work you will need hosting first off then streaming software ie. winamp sam braodcaster so on ..then website hosting with links for others to tune in to your radio unless your radio already as a website then put alink on there. but to try to play your stream with an fm radio connected to the line in jack dont think it would work. I`m sure others round here will tell you if it can work or not but im sure it wont work.. Thanks
