end user
Well here's whats happened in the last two weeks since I decided to start my shoutcast station. I had two spare laptops that one had a cracked screen and another had a burned out screen. They're both only two years old. Sooo... I decided to just buy a LCD monitor for now and hook it up to one of the laptops which would be the shoutcast source. I didn't want to fork over for new monitor so I hit up craigslist. Had selected 3 monitors and got replies that all were available untll the time when I asked for the address of each person, then all of a sudden no one replied - WTF? So I paid $135 for each laptop to have the monitors replaced. So they were good to go in two days. I had my shoutcast server and was ready to go. Well the Dell laptop monitor went after 5min of running, ok so off to the Acer ,well all was good and then all of a sudden my internet connection started to flake out and I couldn't run the source from home. Well call up SHAW and they couldn't send anyone in for two weeks to look at my line. Now I'm pissed. So I ordered ADSL in the mean time and it was a 5 day wait since it was Naked ADSL soI bring the Acer to work and run it off my works ADSL connection. Well seem the freeze winamp on reconnect bug in the Shoutcast DSP is still there after all these years and when the stream gets disconnected from the DSP, winamp freezes on the reconnect. Ok so I get the EDCast DSP. Now where rocking and what happens? Well Winamp seem to all of a sudden after a day of no problems stop after every track. I checked the preferences and all was good but seem for some reason Winamp's config file got corrupted and it set itself to stop after each track even though there was no check mark on that setting. I got it sorted after some reading. So now I had my Dell back all working good and my ADSL was ready to go. So I got home to set up the Dell and my new adsl modem. Well the modem is ****ed and need to be replaced. Now WTF??????? In the man time my cable connection is fixed. Now I haven't hooked up the Dell yet and took it to work today and installed Linux Mint 9 and was ready to get things running again. Well after the Mint 9 install all of a sudden there was a bright light and lots of sparks coming out of the Dell's power supply cable. It was going of like a mini fireworks. Wow :scared: what can I say about that except it didn't happened at my house when no one was at home. Now I was gonna get the Acer rocking BUT seems the LCD on it won't turn and it takes several reboots before it does. Really what else can I say. Well I got my new 35" Pro Comp A/T tires for my Bronco today which ride pretty good compared to my 35" Pro Comp Mud tires

jamesdean
Use shout automation for your content. Nothing streamed from your end so no worries on connection and PC issues. Keep it all remote.

end user
Thankyou for that! :D Brilliant read, yet i feel bad laughing.. Hope everything works out mate! Yah good times, good times There are a few more gems like all the Dell power supplies on Craigslist in my area are too far away and since I have to work 6 day per week for the next long future (i don't mind as I run the place by myself) I can't get the ADSL modem replaced or get a new power supply for a few weeks. I might have to hit up Ebay for the power supply and have it shipped over.

Brutish Sailor
Dont give up. Just obsticles for you to overcome. Where there is a will, there is a way. I have a feeling a whole lot is going to happen in the world of streaming in the next 6 months. Call it a gut feeling. Things that are going to make or break the next generation of broadcasters. A whole lot going on from the net neutrility act to the newest royalty battles taxing terrestrial radio, to the implimintation of more mobile in streaming, to AOL releasing Niel, yet still talking about the release of YP2, with AOL practacing a lot of CYA, to the return of D. Saint J (Casterclub)to the broadcast community, to Creative (Sound blaster) announcing moving into the Streaming community, to new development blood in DIY broadcaster DSP's (You should really switch to BUTT, new release, and now Im conversating with the developer) to a Creative Common revolution, I cant really comment about at this point. You have entered the streaming community at a good time. The fact that your willing to fight issues that hinder you, brands you. A problem someone gives up on? That divides the caster from just another voice on the air. You have entered the broadcasting community in interesting times. I have a feeling your going to see interesting things. Hang in there. We all have been there, we may not talk about rough times, but we have all had some Major issues, questioned our belonging in streaming media, made our decisions. Im there for you, and its ok to be frustrated. Our greatest triumphs come from overcomming our deepest frustrations. Brutish Sailor
Trust me, Im been (and probably still) an ignorant guy in the broadcast community, and somehow, I have survived this long, and it took me a long time to open my eyes at the big picture. Just hang in there, if you understand how to take a step back, and comprehend whats wrong with your setup, and yet still have fun doing things while your fixing stuff and analysing solutions, your way ahead of the game. end user
My last main obstacle now is that I don't know any of the artists that I'm playing and its hard to find lots of time to listen to 1000 tracks enough times to remember who is who. Before I knew 100% who was what and who did what tracks. If I heard a sample in a track I could tell who it came from.
Brutish Sailor
You have unpublished artist submitting you music? KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
end user
You have unpublished artist submitting you music? Not set up for that yet, all tracks are CC licensed with the share/transmit attribute for non commercial purposes. The station is non commercial so I think I'm covered, i'll get a lawyer eventually as I need an answer to if someone donating money to the site is deemed commercial usage or if showing banners to businesses I know for free is commercial usage. Brutish Sailor
Got to be careful with CC, Im actually working on a "all bull cut" guideline for CC, but I need to get on their forums and ask some questions/present challenges. Reason being? Because despite the fact we are not making cash off our stations, we are stll passing files by streaming. Therefore, we should be considered a commercial entity CC, and a "Money losing commercial entity" by the RIAA. Its been headache getting everything sorted out, but I finally realized the best bet for this project is to start contacting CC artist directly and getting them to make a seperate agreement to allow us to broadcast there music, and let me have permission to host there music, along with the agreement for our permission sitting on the server. If you understand some of the CC license aspects, I could use some help putting it all together. Once it flys, consider us golden with a library of unsigned artist/CC artist. Also the agreement covers CYA's broadcaster liability (included the whole "I agree to submit intellectual property which is entirely mine in whole, and not covered under any royalty collection service/ copyrighted by any entity other than Creative Commons.") So a little safer for the broadcaster. I will also include an E-mail contact location, so that broadcasters can work with the artist for interviews an promotional purposes, what a concept! end user
Ok here's some more juice things. Yesterday BUTT stopped working properly with dropping the stream and not getting listed on the SC YP. Then looks like maybe it was switching to EXT4 or a bad install but my Acer SC laptop started having issues with programs hanging and not closing properly (A couple of reason after reading Ubuntu forums) . Had to reinstall with EXT3 but so far its all good but still problems with BUTT In the man time while I'm waiting for a new power supply for my two year old Dell Inspirion 1420 the power supply on my Inspirion 1720 stopped working just when I was gonna run my stream from it till I reloaded the Acer. I'm not even making this shiat up.
