Station IDs and Station Imaging - What to say?

Not sure how to ask this, but I would like to experiment with putting together some Station IDs and Imaging spots for my radio station. I'm not sure what is involved or to be more exact, what is usually said in a Station ID or Imaging spot.

I've already put some humorous Radio Skits together that came out pretty good and I'll post a link to them after I make 10 posts here on BCW. Who knows, you might get an idea for your station from what I've done.

But, to put it bluntly, my Station ID's and Station Imaging spots suck.

So I have a couple of questions...

1) Is there a repository somewhere on the net or even here of scripts to help us know what is usually said in these Station ID and Imaging Voice Overs ?

2) Is there a place where we can hear other Station ID or Imaging Voice Over spots so we can get an idea of how a proper spot sounds?

I've only heard a couple on a few internet stations and it would be nice if I had a larger selection of completed Station ID/Imaging spots to compare to as a template for my station.

Thanks in advance for fielding my question,

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

You can check out the Request section and download some of the VO's. That will give you an idea of what people request.

http://forums.broadcastingworld.net/forumdisplay.php?f=244

and this was posted also, I don't recall who posted the link, But I did bookmark it myself to review what information it ha.. It might help you as well. It's a Radio Glossary for Radio broadcasting terms defined through an easy to understand glossary including those for AM, FM, HD, SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio, Internet Streaming, and Podcasting.

Hope it helps,

Bill

Hi Dennis,

As BW member you have always the possebility to add upto 5 attachements to your post ...

Feel free to upload to this topic "your" samples

That way other people can give you feedback about : voice, panning, settings etc etc

As Bill quoted, check the free VO section

Basicly a liner has to have some details about the subject

Station ID : name / callname of the station + slogan

Host ID : name host + name / slogan of the set + with or without the stationname

If reads are made by VOs they gonna be made as DRY liners

People who add production work to the liners gonna use the best parts of it and even then its possible they gonna add their own twist to the liners by using editing, cut and paste them etc etc

attached some liners who where produced by Me for different projects

Looking forward to your uploads

Thanks GKREurope... I was planning on providing a link to my website for the skits I made. Since this is my 10th post I might try doing a link in my next posting.

Although the skits are far from professional, it just shows what can be done with some imagination and cheap music software FX.

Thanks for the suggestions and liners.

I have a lot to learn, but this stuff is so much fun.. of course this is what makes learning so much more enjoyable.

Take care,

Dennis

Wink :D (Y)

Edit your first post on top of this page > "go advanced" > click "manage attachements" and upload upto 5 MP3 files

and if needed ... make a new written content for your first post :)

Thanks, I'll add one of my skits in the next post...

Boy, I thought my stuff sounded OK till I heard your liners and some of the VO on this site. I realize I really need to redraw my work... but that is why I'm here. :P

Here are two skits I made... I wanted something on my radio that was really different and would cause my listeners to say... "What the???".

Anyway the first one is a character skit of a caller who thinks he's won a radio contest...

The second skit is one I call "The Mob takes over Coronal Winds"... It's self-explanatory...

I realize I need to work on my acting, but it was so much fun putting these together and hopefully someone else might get inspired to do something like this on their radio.

I should also mention all characters are my voice accept the child yelling in the Mob Hit Skit.

Hope you enjoy and any ANY feedback that will allow me to improve is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Johny for the feedback. You bring up a good point. I've had a hard time mastering these skits.

I am currently using Ableton Live 5 and I'm not really too happy with it for a couple of reasons. I've been thinking of getting Adobe Audition 3 for voice over work.

Does AA3 do a better job with radio voice over work than Live would? Live is a nice application, but it seems better suited for music creation rather than voice overs... Am I correct in my assumption?

What is the take on Adobe Audition 3 for this kind of work? Is it preferred to other DAWs on the market? Adobe A3 costs almost as much as a mid level DAW.

Thanks,

Dennis

They are good skits, but as johnyC said the background effects are to loud. When your adding the background effects listen to it a couple of times and lower the background each time. You want to hear it, but you don't what to have it over take whats being said.

I know I've done the same thing and I'm sure everyone else has and it's only because you know what is being said, so you know each line. So you understand what's going on. So put your headphones on and really listen to it, You'll get it.

Thanks, I plan on redoing these skits after I get a better handle on this VO thing.

I appreciate the feedback.

Nice !

I like mostly the content of the "radio contest"

However ... the voice has to be uplifted ... its currently "in" the bed

positive is the bed you used into that "radio contest" ID ... The bed is SUPERB !

Thanks GKREurope for the critique... I'm not sure what you mean by "in the Bed" or how I should uplift my voice? How do I separate these? I do have them on separate tracks.

Are you saying that the Bed and Voice are at the same volume? Will lowering the Bed volume will bring out the voice or do I need to add enhancing effects... i.e. Limiter, EQ, Compressor, etc. on each track?

How would you do this in your system? ... and what are you using to edit/create your VO?

Sorry for all the questions and I'm sure this is an easy fix.

I really need to improve my mastering skills and any help is appreciated.

Thanks Dennis,

If you are using Adobe or similar try this :

- channel 1 = voice | rightclick into the channel and choose "volume", increase this with +2 untill +2,6 (depending on the volume of the musicbed)

- channel 2 = musicbed | make the same adjustements but now you decrease the volume (if needed !!)

If the uplift of your voice is working out and gives a nice result ... check this setting : rightclick into channel 1 and choose "track equalizer" - increase the high setting with +2 untill +2,4

After doing this the voice gonna sound more clear than before and gonna create a kind of supplement uplifting - aka it can add "a sparkle" to the voice

Notice : increasing the EQ isn't always needed, it can also harm the voice more or less

important is : to listen to your files over and over again, untill you are sure you have the right "sound"

off the record :) ... We don't give "critique" ... a better word is "a review" about a subject, content etc :D

Thanks again GKREurope... I currently do not have Audition... but I'm thinking of getting it.

I've been doing some research on Adobe Audition and it seems that V2 is a bomb... in a bad sense and V3 has major ram, VST and installation problems ... so it looks like I may buy 1.5. I've read it also works with VST but not sure if it has the same problems as V2.

I might pose this question outside this post, but is 1.5 really worth the investment? I can get a copy for $50.

Just curious,

Dennis
