KHUK
Any ideas as to why this keeps happening? The XLR leads are brand new, the rack itself is brand new. I can be in the middle of recording a voiceover and it just cuts out or sometimes makes a space aged noise.
Arfa B
I don't know this kit personally, but this problem indicates some sort of instability causing possible Ultrasonic (above hearing range) Oscillation! Could be gains set too high, input impedance not low enough (read specs, but should be balanced and 600 ohms or less I would guesstimate!) Also a poor earthing connection on the audio leads (check with a multimeter and wiggle them to see if they are intermittent), a dodgy power supply either internal in the unit, or more likely if external to the box. Another cause (more technical) could be that the earthing on the cct boards or de-coupling capacitors are faulty? You can only nail down a fault like this with an oscilloscope though. There are various other possible faults too numerous to mention here! Try the obvious, and if no joy- send it back is my immediate advice! That isn't cheap kit- so, should work perfectly! As always thoiugh fault finding is a process of elimination, and good detective work! KHUK
Thanks Arf, you didn't happen to be a studio tech in a past life did you? The people at focusrite mentioned some of the things you wrote. I made a list to rule out all other possibilities and found it to be the XLR cable. I bought the cable for under a fiver just as a quick fix, but never did I imagine it to be that ineffective.
Arfa B
Hi Kris, I was an Electronics engineer up to design level once! I have more or less built my mixer and compressor and all that! Just wish there was still money in it! I hardly use my workbench any more :-( Glad to be of assistance! If I have helped you with a Freebie- please be kind enough to add a link from your own site or blog to mine- thanks! http://arthurburton.net Thank You! KHUK
Arr, that explains it then. The whole idea of building mixers and compressors sounds interesting. I suppose if you do it your own way you get the sound you’ve always wanted.
