Best bet...if you need a stand for your mic, you can go through BSW and get a regular arm for $100 USD mine works great...i've had it for over a year now, and havent had a problem out of it....but if you are on a very limited bidget you can go to RadioShack and pick up a stand for $12 USD

Stands are easy to come by, true, but mounting your mic on a desk boom gets you in the professional state of mind, like putting on a nice suit.

So far, the Q-Mic QM-50 for $39.95 (+$12.27 s/h) and $10.00 for the 12"riser (total $62.22) seems best for a new arm that includes an XLR cable. Don't know what the international shipping would be. I've seen used arms go for less.

Found mine in a rubbish skip- it is an old and cheap anglepoise lamp that I fitted an old SO239 RF (SO239 is the Socket- You don't need a PL259 which is the plug!!!!) socket to. This is the correct thread for common Microphone holders!!!!

Takes less than half- an -hour to modify, and somehow being free seems much better than anything available from a store! ;-)

Arf'

If I have helped you with a Freebie- please be kind enough to add a link from your own site or blog to mine- thanks! http://arthurburton.net

Thank You!

Agreed, BSW is a great place to buy radio broadcasting gear.

I LOVE BSW!

They are also the forum sponsors for the fantastic message boards on TapeOp.com

Anyway, when shopping for a broadcast studio desk boom, be sure and ask the following questions:

1) How heavy a load can it bear and still maintain it's position?

2) What length it it when fully extended?

3) Are the springs quiet?

4) What mounting hardware (Riser, Clamp, flange) does it include?

5) If pre-wired with XLR:

A) What length is the cable?

B)Has the cable been tested?

Some stands can bear a one pound mic, others, a three pound mic. Some are between 30" and 45" extended. some have rubberized springs, some have rusty springs. Some include a 12" others have it as an optional add-on.

And lastly, some have XLR fed through the armature and if it's a used arm, be sure the line is good, otherwise you'll have to insert then solder on your own jack or plug to the cable.

Just make sure you're not getting a glorified lamp fixture meant for supporting a light bulb.

Hope this is useful. Good hunting!

I have 2. I have a QM-50, and another that I thought was a QM-50 when I was ordering it.. however I must have been wrong.. because with the Broadcaster, it's got a 5pin XLR output so I had my local tech guy solder me up a short 3pin to 5pin connector to go from the mic to the integrated XLR cable in the arm.

I had him solder it up for the arm I recently after moved, and when i connect my Broadcaster to the arm I have now, I find that the polarity is reversed! hah SO to combat that, I have to use the phase reversal on my VX2000 vocal strip.

I've been looking into the PSA1, the KM 1 from Luxo or the Heil PR2T .. all very similar designs. I just like that design for a mic arm. Now is the part where I have to find the money to get one =)~

I have a used desk boom made by O.C. White (model 51900) with the 12" riser that I was planning to sell.

I had bought a pair of them as a package deal, but only needed one.

It looks like this except it is grey and comes wired with XLR cable. Before you pay retail, let me know what your budget is if anyone is interested. I just want to recoup my expenses.
