Broadcasting Indie Artist, What Fee Would You Pay?

I am working with a band and they control their own music. I set up a Music Shop for them to sell their songs. I also want to add all of the songs with Broadcasting Rights.

The songs are for .99 cents each or you can purchase all of them for personal listening.

I need to know, "If you can buy music from the artists" What do you think is a fair fee to broadcast their music as much as you want? It would be a Onetime/One Off payment.

If you can I need a price per song and a price per album.

For example the band I am working with has 8 songs in one album, how much would you be willing to pay per song or album?

I run a station that only broadcasts unsigned artists... and the bands usually chomp at the bit just to have their songs run. They love the idea of having them played on a station just to get them promotion and are more than okay with just having the music played in a regular rotation.

I'd love to be in a situation to pay the bands to run their music, because that would help them even more, but unfortunately I can't. =/

Not if you have permission from the Copyright holder to play the music...which in most cases is the Artist..so as long as the Artist gives you permission to play the music without paying royalties you are in the clear...lol just like indiecore_radio said

True. When it comes to independent artists, they usually "pay you" for the opportunity.

As long as the entity that controls the legal aspect of the music gives your written consent, then your fine.

If soundexchange or bmi or anyone comes after you all you have to tell them (and prove it) is you have the permission of the copyright holder to play the music...

the LAW is made to protect the copyright holder but if the copyright holder gives you permission then that protection is not neccessary....ergo vis a vis they wont come after you..

And soundexchange, bmi, ascap, and sesac collect money for the Artist from entity's that dont have the permission to use the music from them..

As far as the copyright and soundexchange. They don't have a case if an artists gives you permission to play their music. Who are they going to say the money is for? They can't say it's for the artists your playing, because the artists said you could play it.

So the collection of royalties on the artists behalf is null and void, No longer valid or enforceable.

It's like when I do a free voice over. I do them for free, But it is my voice and it is my property I own all copyrights to it. But I allow people to use the voice over. There are no royalties or payments.

For example: if I did a free voice over and soundexchange told you. You need to pay a royalty on it. What would you tell them?

My guess is, Anyone would say, No I don't need to pay a royalty because the artists that did it, allows me to use it.

But if anyone is paying royalties I sure would like to know. Because I'll try and collect the money they collected ;)

Bill,

In our co-op are over 1000 independent artists. We play their music exclusively on the station and sell their mp3's through various vehicles. As we are a co-op, the artists may (and do) at their discretion kick back up to but not exceeding 10% of sales, at point of sale. We neither pay nor charge them to air their music on FCMC Radio. We make certain they are protected by creative commons licensing.

The artists dictate how much their music will sell for. The common choice is $1 USD per track. A bundled cd containing 8 tracks would have a discount/incentive, and sell for $6. These are arbitrary figures though. As aforementioned, we don't assume to pin a value on the music, this is soley the lot of the musician in our view, it is after all, their music. We do not play cover artists. Further, the onus and liability is on the artist to ensure their submitted work is their own. Hope this helps you some.
