Choosing the right automation software

Recommended Posts

I'm the station manager of my university's internet radio station, and we're looking for a more stable automation solution. We're currently using SAM 3.7.1 with MySQL. We're dealing with freezing/dead air more than once a week currently. We're supposed to stream 24/7.

Budget: $2000

What I need:

  • RELIABILITY
  • Shoutcast streaming
  • Clock scheduling
  • Easy interface for stopping and starting the automation for our live DJs
  • Easy sweeper integration
  • Support for large library (10k+ songs)
  • Listener statistics
  • Support for lengthy audio elements (more than half an hour)

I'm not opposed to sticking with SAM if that's the best option, but at this point I think that it's in my best interest to start again from scratch.

Have a look at http://radiodj.ro

Its a Free Program and works like a Dream and above You’ll save that $2000! As for the Listener stats you can pull them from Shoutcast with a simple script. And You can stream to shoutcast using a Stand alone program Like Edcast.

Its only a suggestion should you want something Big for your bucks then I guess a google search would help you.

SAM 4.9.0 isnt any different really to the 3 versions other than the ability to stream AAC!

Really cant understand why Spacial get away with Charging for Software thats Really NOT up 2 the Job. I’ve experienced the same thing as this Bloke SAM Freezing and screwing up.

Time for SAM to move over methinks Theres Better free alternatives now.

We ALL know your dislike for the product, give it a rest. Or is your dislike for the former admin there tainting your perspective? No it it is not the same product as previous versions AND mine runs 24x7 without issue. If you can make the comparison that yours doesn't must be you then.

I made a typo. We're actually on 4.7.1. Sorry about that. I've been seriously considering the Station Playlist suite. Any thoughts there? I looked into Player 101, but they quoted me something out of my price range with add-on modules.

Look at the Arrakis Wave. Not free, this is a professional package that does everything you could ever need. It will also keep you legal. Additionally, once you review the software you actually may want to consider the package deal Arrakis is offering.

I can VERY HIGHLY recommend Station Playlist Creator, in assoc. with either their entire suite, or indeed SAM with the appropriate PAL script- it is totally bullet proof.

The crossfading in SAM has a lot going for it. Only use mysql with it for reliability though.

I have a friend who runs a station, and that has had no down time for over 2 years (except when the main servers broke) he has it setup to recover from any power down situation, and it simply NEVER fails. In fact, I know another guy who has had the same reliable setup for nearly 4 years from memory.

One common factor is that they both run XP, not Vista nor 7!

The key is to start a brand new installation from scratch with new hard drives.

Put the music on a seperate drive, and CLONE this to a couple of standby machines. That way, they can bomb you, and it will still be ok.

You can even have a 2nd machine take over, if left running in the background all the time.

Good luck.

If I have helped you with a Freebie- please be kind enough to add a link from your own site or blog to mine- thanks! http://arthurburton.net

Thank You!

I know people (friends) at The Netherlands who are using SAM, and they had a maximum of 2 Years nonstop activity

They are already about 9 years at the www with their project .. so they have already some experience with it ...

and guess what ... they run their SAM on an old system of Windows ... Windows 98

The owner build his own computer on the Win 98 platform. The pc runs SAM only + their mp3 tracks on the hard drives of the pc

One common factor is that they both run XP, not Vista nor 7!
