Phone into computer

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any good suggestions for recording phone conversations right into the computer? I have a speaker phone in my studio, and what I would like to do is record conversations when I am voicing audio for a client and being directed by a producer. I would be talking through my Mic, they would hear me through the speaker phone, but I want their comments recorded as well...short of sticking another mic near the speaker on the phone(which would wreak havoc with my recording) I'm not sure what to do. I have researched Telephony products, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. How do you internet radio folks get callers on the air? Cost effectively? ANy help would be much appreciated!! :thumbup:

I have a solution that works for me and was very cheap...

If you have a Mixer board with seperate inputs and levels for each...go to Radio Shack and pickup a Multi-Phone Recording Controller (Cat#: 43-2208) and a 1/8th" Mono to 1/4" Stereo adapter (or whatever is comprable to your mixer input jack) and plug it into one of your stereo inputs. Now, when you want to have an actual caller on the phone with you while you talk, you simply have the unit switched to Record and bring up the level on that input. You talk into the phone and it works just like a mic (be sure to bring down the level on your regular mic as it will create an echo or feedback. I would suggest running EQ on it to remove any hum you might get while "Live". You can also use ANY recording software to record this way!

Thats all folks

I personally use a mixture of services;

For voicemail calls, and doing interviews etc - not needing to be live, I use the Tesco Internet Phone (UK Service, although based off an AUS service) since it gives you a UK landline number free when you setup, unlike Skype...

For live calls, I use a little piece of kit which plugs into the cable from the handset of the phone to the receiver part, and gives me a mini jack connection from it...

I'll see if I can find some links for useful things for you

Skype is not really going to work for what I want to do. I need a piece of actual outboard equipment that will allow me to feed the phone into my computer. My only purpose is for a voice director to be able to hear my read and I also want to record his or a producers comments onto the file I'm recording for them at the time. Thanks to everyone for their help and info. I am still looking into all the different types of equipment out there. Once I find one that works I will report back. I also look forward to any further info anyone might be able to offer, so I'll keep this thread open.

I know that some Professional stations (that you can stream from your car) Have a built in phone in there mixer and they switch it over to that. That is a good question though. You might have to ruin a phone or to testing some stuff... :P. Maybe if possible take the phone apart and disconnect the speaker and plug it into a input somewhere? I really have no clue. When ever I do a comp. with phones I just put it on speaker phone and next but not too close to my mic. and it works fine. Listener's love it.

i found this....

This would also have a phone number and would allow them to call in.
