questions from someone who is new at this

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I was refered here by a comment on an article on pcworld.com. I have two questions, one will most likely be easier to answer than the other.

1. Let's start with the easy question, I put together a radio show using Audacity for my senior project, and I am happy with the way that came out. I could do the same thing as a hobby, just because, but as the article said, it's no fun if you don't have an audience. So, I've thought about the idea of starting my own station off and on for a while. I think I know how I'll do it if I ever do. However, my concern with the Edcast Winamp configuration is I will have dead air between songs where there is usually a bit of silence. When I did my show I was able to fix this by using sweepers that the production guy I was working with made for me. However, I had to use multiple tracks in Audacity to put it all together. There was also a segment where I used Auto Duck to fade down and then talk over the beginning of one of the songs. Is there a free program I can do all this with that I can do live broadcasts with?

2. Less words on this one, but the more complicated question, having to do with licensing. If I don't want to make money, what do I need to do?

If your looking for good software to run a station with try RadioDJ http://radiodj.ro it's free you can use that with edcast with the right mixing settings you wont get any dead air. If you get stuck with it their is great support on the Community forums.

As for Licencing try http://streamlicensing.com/ i think their plans start at $22 a month.

Hope that helps

Thanks! Does Radio DJ feed the audio directly into Edcast or do I need to use Stereo Mix or something for that? If so, then that's going to be an issue because I use a screen reader and don't want this in the stream.

I don't have any experience with Screen readers so i couldn't tell you if that would interfere with the sound. I run mine with virtual audio cables feeding the sound from radiodj into edcast.

Don't know about virtual audio cables but you could get a usb audio interface such as the Behringer UFO 202 or the like and then run RadioDJ through that and have Edcast pick up the sound from RadioDJ and away you go. usb audio interfaces are very cheap and solid. I use a more expensive M-Audio fast track pro for my main RadioDJ output and the Behringer 30 bucks for the Monitor and editing etc in Radio DJ and the default Realtek card that came with the PC for system internet and other stuff.

It's doable

Look for my Youtube channel "the hobbycaster" . It might stir some thoughts. Remember That dead air happens. Its not the worst thing in the world. My biggest pieces of advice:

Know your target audience. Theirs too many markets of media for people out there to be too vanilla. Pick and choose your battles. Are the people that listen to your station like you?

Then listen to your own station. Do it with different devices. Spend 4 hours listening to your station. Ask yourself "Why am I better than Pandora or slacker radio"

Do it for hours. If your not the #1 fan of your own station as a hobby broadcaster, theirs a disconnect somewhere.

Take some time, and decide what makes your station unique to you. You got to play with it to develop it.
