Gadfly
Hi, I was wondering is it possible to run radio station from a laptop 24/7. I stream only at the week-ends at present, but would like to be on a bit longer.
Gadfly
That's really great news. I'm on and off right now and that's not helpful in building an regular audience. Good luck with your station.
johny c
If you plan to use a mixer you also need to get your self some sort of usb audio interface. The soundcard inputs on laptops may not suit. I use Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202 USB-Audio Interface's in my studio. They are easy to setup and use. If you already have a mixer with inbuilt usb, no problem. Gadfly
Thanks for the advice. I do intend to use a mixer and I just bookmarked a webpage that sells the audio interface you suggested on Thomann.de.
saint
Laptops are really not designed to run contiously 24/7. Why not pick up an older Desktop at a thrift sotre and use that for your station ? Gadfly
A friend said the same thing about laptops not designed to run continuously. This thing gets hot and the fans can get very high.
SmoothJazz
A friend said the same thing about laptops not designed to run continuously. Gadfly
So, if I get the cooler, I can then run full-time?
johny c
I use ex corporate pc's for my on-air pcs. Low profile ones so they can go into my rack. Still using some Compaq Evo's and an Acer Veriton 3700 GX, all running Win XP. They all work sweet with very little noise. JamboUK
Dell ex corporates are good as well, small form factor and very quiet running and can be picked up for very little at the moment on flea bay, we are using a number of these and they work very well. One of them has been running continuously for about 3 months with just one restart in all that time.
deejayboom
Hey lads I have wanted to setup an internet radio station with a long time but have no idea where to start and I have a 20gb limit a month on my broadband so I am wondering will this limit be exceeded if I am streaming or what and also I would like to do a few shows on the station myself but at the moment I am having a lot of difficulty with recording from my mixer through virtual dj back into laptop, mic records fine but virtual dj is not recording anymore so I am thinking maybe I have too record links and add them in to music but this is a lot of hassle. Or if somebody can tell me what mixer to buy for this purpose I might be a lot better off. I wwas able to doa show with mic links plus audio from vdj on my old laptop before the hard disk decided to pack up but I have got this fixed and would like to use it for my internet station but dont know do I need a server or can I just download shoutcast or something or what...can someone let me know please, thank you... JamboUK
You would be best to rent a Shoutcast or Icecast server with some Auto Dj space that way you shouldnt go over you broadband allowance, you can then do your live shows and stream from home to your shoutcast/icecast server only when you want to do a live show. With regards to your mixer setup you would have to give us more information and details of the way in which you have it set up?
Gadfly
Looks like I will be going down the desktop route then. Thanks for all replies. I'm lucky enough to be on an un-limited broadband package which means there will be no need for me to use auto DJ. But a problem I'd have with Auto DJ anyway is that you can't use a processor like Breakaway Broadcast for your audio; all the music would be flat. JamboUK
We dont use Auto DJ, we stream from a desktop 24hrs a day unless of course we have a live show on then we use either remote show facility within SAM or we encode and stream from the remote site, we have 300GB of music on the hard drive which gives us fantastic rotation. frostycold
I run 2 stations on laptops running XP. Stick a cooler underneath and let 'em go. Happy broadcasting!
Gadfly
Thanks Frosty Cold. My laptop is propped up by a book for now to allow more ventilation but I will invest in a cooling fans.
JamboUK
I occasionally use laptops for remote shows and have had no problems but I haven't used one for 24hr streaming as yet. When doing a live show using a laptop or MacBook I have not encountered any problems.

djgary72
Used my 5 year old laptop to stream 24/7 for a station that we did back up streaming for and it worked well, as long as the laptop is on a hard surface such as a glass table it will stay cool enough. Gadfly
My laptop is on a pine kitchen table but is propped up by a hardback book for now. I have my eye on a Belkin fan cooler for a 17 inch lappy. At least now I know it can be done, so thanks guys for the comments. Thanks GB.
cgomes
Hey there! Great topic! I´ve started broadcasting at the end of last year. I got an big old desktop of mine (standard configuration - asus motherboard, 2GB RAM and AMD 2.0Ghz processor) back on track for this purpose...It was working fine, broadcasting 24/7 for more than a month, but it stopped working and i´ve found out that my motherboard now is broken. So I need to change it, and with it i need to buy a new processor and RAM aswell... So, my question is, is there a minimum configuration for this pc to be running 24/7 ? Or can I buy a simple motherboard with a simple AMD Sempron and 2 or 4 GB RAM (cheapest config I´ve found)? I´ve heard that the configuration has to be better if I want it broadcasting 24/7..is it true? Thank you so much in advance and sorry for my bad english...
