Non commercial station, who gets paid in Canada?

Who do I have to pay in Canada and how much for a non commercial icecast/shoutcast station? If its non commercial do I still have to submit stats? I dont't mind paying but once I pay off the licensing societies yearly can eff off.

 

If I set up a donation link on my site that leads away from it and have people donate personally to me on another site is this considered commercial?

 

If I advertrise businesses on my stream but do it for free is this considered free? What if they send me some free stuff which I didn't ask for?

If you are playing only Creative Commons, and/or Public domain material no licensing is required, BUT to be safe, and if you are playing mainstream music then yes you will pay a yearly fee. Non Commercial means NO-COMMERCIALS PERIOD. In Canada it is SOCAN and for non commercial it's quite reasonable Link here. http://www.socan.ca/licensees/licence-finder

Yah I looked into CC licensed but most of the better CC licensed music is electronic music but it already gets lots of play on other stations. I was surprised now much CC is played.

 

I've looked into CC licensed rock but that would require serious hours/day/weeks of scouring the internet to find good tracks and then IF I could find enough.

 

Now I'm fine with no commercial/ads whatsoever but is keeping listener logs a requirement?

You bet End User and MarcAlle. In Canada at the present time, and I stress at the present time, because laws are changing rapidly around the globe with various Countries opting in to treaties etc. As it stand here now if you are not running commercials, banners, donations etc, you can get a standard Tariff Form which works out to One hundred Dollars Canadian plus GST (General Sales Tax) as you are streaming audio from a web site through web page(s) and not a terrestrial repeater or run a standard broadcast entity. If you do go commercial then it's a whole other ball of wax with reports and percentage on profits and page impression reports and what percentage of listeners are from Canada etc.

 

So, no if you abide by commercial free as in no revenues, and also NOT playing a commercial for free, and no Banners etc you are good and don't need listener counts...as I said at the beginning...at the present time.

 

Also re- Creative Commons there are lots of Sites to find DIY, CC, Indie, Alternative etc like Jamendo and Indie Rock Cafe to mention two, but to be absolutely sure you are safe I'd say get a License anyway to cover your butt as you never know if some DIY artist has used a sample or two in their work. Copyright is getting far too crazy for the money grabbers out their.
