JohnnyBeGood
Hi all, I'm renting a dedicated Debian server. Just got a new mobile phone and I really like to listen to my favorite online radio's (total of 3). Now the idea is to relay those streams with lower quality (24kbps) and listen it with my mobile phone (android). The reason why i would like to make the online radio stream with lower quality, is because I'm having just 4GB of internet on my mobile phone and at 128kbps it goes pretty fast. Brutish Sailor
There's websites that already do this. Before I start talking about trans-coding, what do you know about your box? Do you use putty to shell in? Even before I start talking about this. Most streaming radio host will do this if you ask. a relay makes them itch, as if someones stealing stats (listener counts, rebroadcasting under their own relay to another station) If you just ask them, they will usually just hook it up. If you relay without giving them a heads up, they will be able to see a relay on their client connections, and they will not be pleased. shoutcaststreaming
You can't relay a stream from one bit rate to another bit rate. For example, a 128k stream can ONLY be relayed to another 128k stream. To use other bit rates, you must use a transcoder, as Brutish has said. JohnnyBeGood
There's websites that already do this. Searching I found only cheapest option of $5 per stream so for 3 station it would be $15 which is a lot for me. If its against site rules can someone at least PM me link to more affordable options? Before I start talking about trans-coding, what do you know about your box? Do you use putty to shell in? I'm pretty familiar with my box and I can SSH into it and run commands and check errors. I didn't started renting it yesterday but rather couple of years ago. Even before I start talking about this. I've contacted them and they aren't able to change the streams quality and some don't really care since are not that popular but I like the music. Like I said this is just for personal use about 3 overseas stations to be able to listen while stuck in traffic on my phone. Brutish Sailor
Ok, then for your box what your looking for is an old copy of a program no longer hosted by its original distributor known as Oddsock Transcoder V3 (I believe it was V3.0 before oddsock went up) http://sourceforge.net/projects/transcoder/ You cant really find any good documentation on it anymore, but if I remember right there was a tutorial on YouTube of how to set it up. I know their is a site that is plug-and-play, you enter the stream IP, and it pops out a transcoded link. I dont know if its still out there. Hope it is.
