Some great microphones

Hello Campers...

I just wanted to point out a really great line of mic's. If your not familiar with Heil Microphones, check them out. Theyre a little bit pricey but worth the money. They tend to have a much wider responce range than others. Heil has been around for 40+ years and make some of the best dynamic mic's i've seen yet. Many artists use them for touring or in the studio. All their models are designed with an outstanding rear rejection to eliminate background noise. Some models use a large "Low Mass" diaphram or "Low Mass" voice coil with tightly wound and strategicially place humbucking coils. As a musician I've used them in both studio and live venues and they are awesome! I wish I had one today just to say I still owned one! Bob Heil engineered the live sound industry with bands like The Who, The Greatful Dead, Jeff Beck, Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton.

I did a microphone shootout between a Shure SM7B, an Electro Voice RE20 and a Heil PR40.

The Heil had great background rejection and superb range and is a choice mic for vocal reproduction.

It has been touted as "a dynamic that thinks it's a condenser"

I noticed however that it seemed a bit bright and on the downside, picked up sibilance and plosives like a condenser. Shock-mount and pop-filter are available for a reason. Still, a great mic for the price actually.

I wouldn't pass one up if saw a good deal on it.

Ultimately I chose the Shure SM7B over the RE20 and PR40 since it provided the best flexibility and more built-in features for roughly the same money.

I think I'll test drive Dads ole Elvis mic just to see how it does.. lol.

Would that be the Shure 55 Unidyne II ?

I won 1st place carving a pumpkin into one for Halloween this year, but the signal to noise ratio is terrible!

I sent these photos to Shure Incorporated, but got no response. Maybe I'll get more appreciation here.

WOW must of took abit to make cool love it

In the unpainted picture, you can see the Shure 55sh product manual that I used for reference.

I started at 4am and submitted it a little after 8am.

It was a nightmare to assemble it well enough so it'd be sturdy for the ride in my truck to the contest.

The paint had barely dried as I was inserting a piece of screen door lining inside to serve as the mic's windscreen.

The instrument plug, if you examine closely, is actually the tip of a drumstick shoved through a gourd!

My only regret is I never got to see it lit from inside!

-Carl.

P.S. -sorry if my pumpkin is thread-jacking a serious microphone discussion....
