saint
Much-loved media player Winamp will shutter on December 20, 2013, the company has announced, with the AOL-owned software planning to cease all of the related web services and yank the official download. The news, quietly announced alongside version 5.66 of the software, ends fifteen years of the app being offered, with the Winamp team warning that anybody wanting a copy before it’s pulled should download soon. http://www.broadcastingworld.net/news/view-474/ Jesus these people are freaking certified nut jobs. What corporate bone head dreamed up this insanity. What really kills me is they plan on yanking Shoutcast as well. All I can say is thank god for Icecast ! saint
It is absolute stupidity like this that makes me wonder about corporate execs some times. Now is the time for Icecast to start a serious fun raising drive - I bet they could make a killing on donations to spruce up the server software a wee bit. Rob, are there any up to date DNAS equivilants for Icecast ? Relaxing Entertainment For The World - - www.ScenicRadio.com
Brutish Sailor
UHHH YES. You can acutually set Icecast into an IP: Port mode if thats what you mean? But Icecast servers are superior as is in every way, shape, and form. KH Icecast = Ahead of the game. by a longshot. Its servers are more flexable, it has a better DIY setup, it updates so fast that it usually pisses third party developers off. I like it KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego

James
Thinking about setting up a SHOUTcast forum section again since they will be pulling the Winamp forums soon... Jay (Winamp Forum Moderator) had a few words to say... I think it would be shocking if they shutdown the YP, simply because it represents so much traffic. Now, if there is no further development and no further improvement in the YP or SHOUTcast, it doesn't really matter, eventually it will go by the wayside. However, given that there have been releases very recently it would surprise me if SHOUTcast's YP is going anywhere anytime soon. (DrO?) As far as the free bandwidth going away, that really doesn't surprise me. That was just a nice bonus for a select few. Looks like SHOUTcast wont be going far. AOL should GIVE the developers the SHOUTcast domain name and the developers should open up a donation site before things go down. That way some servers could be bought, the YP could be transferred and things could be easily patched. But who knows what will happen. Shame really. Brutish Sailor
I thought about signing this, but Im not adding my Street addy. What about crowd funding it? I wonder what AOL would charge to sell it? Kickstart it, with a promise the advertizing ($6 mil annually) would be divided evenly among all the supporters after expenses annually. Then crowdfund a development team. A legit one, that isnt outsourced and interacts directly with the users, and answers whims of what would make it cooler, like A DSP release edition, with the DSP built in. Also add AC3 support for 7.1 surround sound streams. KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
Brutish Sailor
You know, let me actually pitch this for a second. We crowd fund it. lets say AOL gives a somewhat reasonable number. We offer 1 donation type on kickstarter. Make it like shares. The more you buy in on it, the more advertizing revinue you get in return. What would be the good that would come out of it? 10 fold. 1) The web host. The web host would benefit because Winamps technology would no longer come at the speed of snail. The host could give direct feedback to the DSP developers, and together? Get a more stable, customer efficient streaming device together. 2) The Broadcaster. Theirs a million things I wished winamp could do via virtual audio connections to make it better for streaming, and make it a more reliable broadcasting device. with it in the broadcasters hands, we could work torwards making it suit our needs. How about edcast syncing up perfect with HE-AAC+ support? 3) The 3'rd party developers. They have wanted to legally use pieces like the EQ, or the codecs, without AOL letters involving copyright enfringment. In exchange for development support? They get access to applications of it, and get to help shape it different to meet the needs of a changing age. Imagine a 64 bit flavor of winamp (audiophile edition) Plus, winamp doesnt get sold to a skeese by AOL, that just wants to monetize Winamp/Shoutcast. Im sure someone will lowball an offer on it, and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets scooped up. AOL has already made its $80 mil on it via advertizing. Some money is better than no money. As long as it can be made innovative, and user friendly, and the crowd can bring about a mass interest in it, we could pull off the second golden age of winamp. Not to mention, thats the bottom line of how to make your donation money back, + some. By just showing interest in the development, and helping to improve and modernizing it, we could successfully keep that ad traffic flowing.... Lets crowd fund this bitch. We just need a number from AOL KNSJ.org / 89.1 FM San Diego
Brutish Sailor
LOL, I wonder whats going through the mind of Wave streaming right now. Out of anyone that probably feels betrayed, its them. saint
AOL will treat Winamp - Shoutcast just like they did Netscape - bury it and spit on it. billh
But what are you looking at as far as an offer to buy it $30 mill. plus? The price will be up there and my guess is low I bet. Urban Hitz Radio
This is a very interesting story. I was waiting to hear about Shoutcast, because I knew it was about to be shut down before the end of the year. A lot of broadcasters that I know, who were given free AOL bandwidth had it taken away, so they had to find their own. The Ax is about to hit, so I'm waiting to find out what the answer is from M$. -- JE .::.(())::. Urban Hitz Radio™ USA .::.(())::. The People' Choice for Hip-Hop & R&B!
