carlrich
Hello All, As I live in England I understand that I need a license from both the PPL and the PRS. Having browsed both of their websites I have come up with the following:- PPL To start of with I would need a Small Radio License as my revenues would less than £5,000 a year and no more than 270,000 performances each year. The cost of license is £200.21 (plus VAT), so £240.25 altogether. PRS From the PRS I would need a Limited Online Music License which allows 180,000 performances each year. The cost of this license is £126 (plus VAT), so £151.20 altogether. So in order to be licensed within the UK I would need to pay £391.45 each year (unless it goes up!) for a small/hobby station to be legal. Now onto some questions.......... 1) With the PPL 270,000 performances each year equates to 739 listeners per day. Would that be correct? 2) With the PRS 180,000 performances each year equates to 493 listeners per day. Again would that be correct? 3) I think I'm right in saying the above licenses only limit me to broadcast within the UK. Would I have to prevent listeners from outside the UK tuning in? That's all I can think of for now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Carl

No...Performance is where one listener is streamed one recorded music track in the service. There is a table here on PPL to help: http://www.ppluk.com/Documents/Radio%20broadcasting/PPL%20Small%20Webcaster%20Licence%20-%20Quick%20guide%20to%20fees%20%282014%29.pdf e.g. If ten people are listening to you station for an hour during which 12 tracks play that = 120 performances. Based on 12 tracks per hour you would need to keep to an average of 62 hours per day (Total Time Spent Listening). e.g. no more than a daily average of 2.5 listeners per hour based on the example I gave. Your figure of 739 listeners per day is way out I'm afraid. 2) PRS also talks about a performance in the same way as PPL. One stream is one track heard by one listener, so would be 120 streams if you had ten listeners and 12 tracks in an hour. You would need to ring them if broadcasting outside UK. 3. PPL covers 42 territories including the UK. Some shoutcast services offer this functionality Your best bet is to ring them, they are very helpful, but just to warn you it's not as cheap as you think. slider1968
If you don't mind adverts being placed in your radio stream Radionomy is free providing you reach so many listening hours in a period of time...they cover the licensing.
master200
Mate Unless your playing to hundreds and thousands and making a hell of a lot of money no one gives a crap...You don`t need it..
andhow
The licensing organisations & record companies do give "a crap". If you are caught broadcasting without a license. You will be shut down, possibly fined. Repeat offenders could have their equipment seized. So no matter how small, you have to pay your license fees. jolly
If you don't mind adverts being placed in your radio stream Radionomy is free providing you reach so many listening hours in a period of time...they cover the licensing. I've been wondering about the same thing (based in AUS here) and thought if I just went with streamlicensing, et al. I would be covered for a global audience; I gather now that this is in fact not the case. That being said, I guess I will now have to search for or create a new thread for Aussie based Internet Radio. Lastly, I have an account for Radionomy but find the interface a bit cumbersome. master200
You Can`t play your radio outside so everyone can hear it that`s the LAW you ever hear of anyone getting done for it?? NO......To get full licensing cover it would cost you an arm and leg, let`s face it unless some evil jealous plonker drops you in it what are the chances of you being caught...Not saying it can`t happen but very unlikely... They DO monitor the radio broadcasting forums and WILL take action from people who flaunt the law. I have seen it happen. Common sense dictates that if you are going to do something illegal, it is best to keep it to yourself. Enticing others to do the same definitely makes you a target.
