The previous posts go back a while in time and things do change...so I am happy to give my opinions on automation in 2014!

First for our stations:

We currently use Station Playlist which we host on a Windows 2012 server for reliability. SPL runs... and runs... and runs... and is packed with features (especially useful is the remote VT amongst others) so SPL is our current choice of software but running on a cloud (dedicated server) for reliability. I am not a fan of running an unattended local computer with ANY software 24 hours a day as you are just inviting problems to come in.

Prior to running SPL we ran on RadioBoss and for starters who want an easier to grasp interface but still a lot of features RadioBoss makes a great software.

I am personally NOT a fan of systems such as SAM for automation. It has it's uses to run some tasks and for those wanting to broadcast live and occasionally leave music running for a while between shows this is fine but to run complexed automation I just don't get it with SAM.

If you want my opinion on cloud automation then we supply two at the moment. Centova is pretty solid, well established and comprehensive with great reporting. The auto DJ is very functional but the interface is a little difficult... we had a client a few weeks ago who had screwed up her auto dj and I took a look... she had about 15 pages of playlists... her planning was a huge engineering masterpiece but when it all went wrong it took me at least an hour to sift through all of her playlists and look where there was an overlap causing an issue... for this reason....

We are really loving Airtime at the moment. Airtime is an open source cloud based platform. You can get their pro version where they host it, run it on your own server (or even local machine if you wish) or get someone like us to host it for you. We are putting Airtime on all of our dedicated servers now and the clients are loving it.

The interface is like a google calendar view, the scheduling has some great features and its almost impossible to screw up! Its very visual and we love it. The only downside to Airtime is the stats... you get a "current listener" number but thats all. We are however working with a couple of software providers to integrate our own stats panel so watch this space... thats the beauty of airtime, it's open source so you can play with it and ammend it all you want.

Hope this helps!

wow this was informative, tell us more about the "remote vt" and your right this post is newer and fresh then some of the stale posts out here, people seem to forget that lol

One of the reasons rivendell is so awesome for those SMART enough to use it, is its also open source and can be changed daily

Feel free to comment back im sure everyone would love to hear more about your setup, are you web or terrestrial, how many "Stations" do you own?

Our company is split into 2 sides, the server side and the broadcasting side.. we run 3 of our own stations (all internet) and are launching more this year... local stations. Remote VT is Voice Tracking... it is something I love about SPL. For those unfamiliar with this it enables you to schedule in your automation "announcements" and then a designated presenter (or multiple) can log in from any location with a light bit of software, bring up all of their announcement slots, see the run up and after and then hit record and send those voice tracks to the server. The result... automation that sounds live! Our overnight stuff when we use this can sound awesome and despite being automated give the impression of live shows... and its so fast... when we do VT shows we put in seveal per hour and can do an entire overnight in 20 mins or so! Rivendell works on Linux right? Never used it, tell me about it, I am keen to play with it! For automation I hate running on a local computer... downside to SPL if you stick it on a server is that a windows licence costs a fortune (although SPL will work on GUI Linux with Wine ) but a native linux based system sounds interesting!

Rivendell is like most automation systems, however its on steroids compared to the paltry offerings most have nowadays. As for SPL rivendell is probably a few years ahead in power and dependability , plus with rivendell you dont pay for every ad on feature to the cores system, its getting easier to setup and run nowadays, right now we are in the middle of choosing between Radiostar and Rivendell, we already did a 24 log shakedown with rivendell, Radiostar is up next soon. We will make a decision soon.

You can download rivendell for free and you will see once you start to play with it just how robust it is compared to windows systems, and if your a person who is not afraid of linux then your a step ahead!

Rock on
