So, what would you do when your Presenter comes out with this...???

Earlier today I sent an email reminder, polite and explanatory too for those newer members of the team, regarding the playlist, why we have one and how we should stick to the auto generated playlist as it's carefully crafted to reflect the feel and style of the station etc, unless back-timing to the top of the hour to accommodate the news etc, where of course a change or adjustment can be made.

Here's where it got interesting, when I got back the following response from one of my Presenters - my question is, what would you like to say / do!!!???...

"I'm not willing to play anymore the songs that come up in the playlist, as 'the feel of music' has little in common with my taste, experience and knowledge... As a result, I don't want to be a part of this and you will need to find someone for Monday" :\

clearly they weren't happy and it sounds like your reminder email was just the opportunity that they'd been looking for to get out of things with yourself (which probably could have been done earlier from their side of things but that probably doesn't matter much now).

I agree with DrO

Your email was a kind of trigger to those who felt themself not anymore at home at your project

Sometimes, if you do somethings as hobby or other, people reach an edge ... That edge can be personal / relationship etc etc

or it can be a state of mind ... example : "not anymore what they are looking for"

At that moment both are in fact right : the person who sended the email (the station), and that one who made an honest reply (the host)

In most of the cases it means a new start for both

I disagree Matt. At a moment like this its best to just let it go and say your goodbyes and move on. Asking for an explanation is very confrontational and nothing and I mean nothing good typically comes from that (for you or the reputation of your station). Move on because there are 1000s of DJs out there looking for an opportunity to get in with a well organized and professionally run station. This could simply be a case of the DJ thinking they could or would be happy with the format and the style of the station and later had a change of heart.

The email itself is confrontational , the person has a problem , apparently with the playlist - has the playlist changed ? Has the format of the station changed ? And if so are all of the djs still on board with the changes? Is this just one person or do other djs feel the same ?

It could be that actually he doesn't want to leave and would rather be offered more flexibility with the playlist , if you decide to be passive and just say goodbye then you'll never know

Personally I think an email saying goodbye would be more confrontational than an actual discussion over the issue

This DJ is being honest about their feelings and there is zero mystery and zero confrontation in this email. A return email stating that you accept the resignation and that you are sorry to see them go is also not confrontational. This could also be a time to speak with the other DJs 1 on 1 and see how they are feeling about the playlist or any new/recent changes.
