deaddred
Its late FRI so I didn't want to wait for a reply from SOCAN. Anyone know off hand what the cost is for a non commercial icecast station? This is on their site 1.9% of gross Internet operating costs, times the ratio of audio page impressions to all page impressions if that ratio is provided to SOCAN, and 0.5% if not provided. Stations that include gross Internet operating costs in calculating payments under Tariff 1B are not required to pay under Tariff 22C . Well I have a spare server (runs several game servers) which I pay for but I'm just using some spare resources to run the shoutcast server for free. So it doesn't cost me anything but for arguments sake say its $10 per month so $120 per years. So the calculation is like this? 1.09% of 120 X0.05 if I don't submit the ratio of the streaming player page/other page visits? Thanks
deaddred
Got a reply from Socan. The type of license you would require is a SOCAN 22.F license. I'm attaching the description for Tariff 22.F in regards to non-interactive audio websites as this is what applies to online radio stations. This type of license is fairly simple; the fees are based on a percentage of the revenue and are subject to a minimum fee of $100 per year (plus tax). If the website does not generate revenue, then only the minimum fee applies. I am attaching the application form for your convenience and review. You can use the second tab of the excel document to help you calculate your licensing fee. I have prefilled all the fields according to a $0 revenue model for 2014. Your first year of operation is based on an estimate and then actuals are reported at the end of the fiscal year. This is also the report that we would ask you to complete on an annual basis (or quarterly if your fees go over $350/year). If initiating your license now you will only have to renew and pay fees again at the end of 2015! If you are ready to apply for the license, you can simply return the completed application form to me by email stating your approval in the body of the email. You are welcome to make payment by credit over the phone or EFT. Once we process your payment, you can start broadcasting legally right away! So $100 per year if no revenue was generated. That's pretty cheap.
deaddred
Ok so for those in Canada. No commercial internet radio station it cost me $105 after taxes for a year. I asked about stats and they said it would be nice if 7 days worth could be available on hand but it not a strict requirement.
deaddred
So I can say SOCAN has really good customer serivce for New Media licensing. I had a reply next day and the license was assigned the same day after payment. Not so much with RESOUND Got their auto reply and 5 days later nothing. I did find the info eventually and its $25+ GST per year for a non commercial license.
deaddred
I still haven't heard from RESound so Ill call it a case of we don't care too much about non commercial stations.
voodoohippie
Last time I checked StreamLicensing's website they cover SOCAN for Canada. Makes things really nice since you don't have a mound of paperwork. Hope things don't change with that. Makes things really nice since you don't have a mound of paperwork. Hope things don't change with that. Except for a non commercial station I'd be paying 2x the price. Socan $100 ReSound $25 + tax per year. Your Plan Price: $23.50 recurring monthly + $20.00 one time setup charge. This plan is for stations with monthly totals up to: 3,500 TLH (Total Listening Hours) $20 Gross Revenue and/or Total Expenses They don't seem to be ReSound licensed so... Should add I never got a reply ro ReSound so if they want me to pay they can find my site and ask me. Even through I'm not a fan of paying for promoting, SOCAN New Media agent was super nice and fast on the set up aka very professional and wanted my business. Her emails contained all the info that I requested with out having to email multiple times. An added bonus I don't have host my player from their system and close my website when users click on it. dotme
ReSound is expensive unless you are a legally registered non-profit organization. "non-commercial webcaster means any webcaster other than the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, that is owned and operated by a not-for-profit organization" - Source: http://www.resound.ca/en/docs/tariff-8.pdf Hopefully you're all good there. If you're not a legal nonprofit, they will want a lot more than $25 though.

Its any website/stream that is non commercial ie a personal hobby. Its $25 per year for the cost. I didn't ask about stats but SOCAN said they might ask for a 7 days worth of stats but its not a requirement even if they ask you. I didn't ask ReSound but can't see it being any different. So at least in Canada going with Stream Licensing will pretty much be min double the cost per year if you're non commercial.
