What will happen to analog once everyone is digital?

Recommended Posts

Once everything is digital all the analog transmitters will go the way of the dinosaur. Analog transmitters will most likely end up on eBay or in the junk. Course I think this could be an opportunity. Much as Shortwave is still around, analog might be relegated to a new subculture...a Lowtech Arena for hobbyists to expand in.

We'll just have to see what develops!

When digital comes in everyone will able to access it. It will be as simple as going down to the post office, filling in an application, paying a license fee and TA DA! You're now a digital broadcaster! I kid you not. Digital radio is going to be the worst thing to happen to the industry. Idependant and smaller broadcasters will fold because they won't be able to compete with the huge networks. When DR comes into effect in Oz every commercial and community license holder will be given 6 digital channels or the option of two high bitrate channels and 6 low bitrate channels. It's going to completely screw the industry format-wise. There will be too many stations competing for a very small advertising revenue pool, and the small fish will die. Just my two cents :retard:

I think Digital Radio an Australia will be a flop.If people have perfectly good stereo systems they are not going to throw them out just to go Digital But if it does take off I think AMradio will disappear but FM radio will always be with us. And they tell us Digital radio gives us clearer sound, what,s wrong with F.M.stereo sound nothing.

Digital Radio in the UK has completely failed.

Mainly because 98% of UK stereo stations use a 128kb/s audio codec, using MP2 technology... because of this, the audio received is lower quality than FM, so basically, no one is interested.

And it's now too late, if they update the codecs, then everyone will have to buy a new DAB receiver. It just seems stupid to me that they built this system on software that was already outdated before it was launched.

Either way, the government over here are trying to save DAB, despite countless major broadcasters pulling out completely

Analog is here to stay...for now. Nowadays, FM radio receivers are relatively cheap and last for quite a number of years. FM radio can also reach more listeners than internet radio at the moment. Unless someone invents a method to provide the whole state with Wi-Fi access, I doubt that internet radio would succeed analog radio anytime soon. Major radio stations usually broadcast in both formats.

I mean, internet radio is more limited in the number of listener slots than high-powered FM transmissions. Thus FM gets many listeners more easily although the listeners are from the local area where the FM station is located. FM radio receivers are also cheaper than having an internet connection.

This thread is about digital radio, not internet radio.

Analog is not being used in the uk full stop from jan.2010 everything is going digital -- tv & radio so to say analog will be around for abit your right :) a year left in the uk

Actually the digital switchover in the UK is only for television, and it will finish in 2012 (or 2013 in the Channel Islands :P)

Currently, the UK has no dates for a fully digital radio service, simply because DAB has, as of recently, more or less failed in the UK.

The change is starting right now in the US, because all tv stations have to be digital by February 2009, not on February 2009. It wasn't really a big deal though becuase most stations were already digital. A few low budget spanish channels were the only channels in my area that were still in 100% analog.

Y'all ought to watch this: "Get set for digital" video ad with Max Headroom. Prophetic.

There's a bunch of them on YouTube. I cracked up atTHIS shorter one.

Matt Frewer, still as brilliant as ever.

We actually air a PSA from the FCC on our station telling listeners to prepare for the digital TV Transition in the US by 2.09, and honestly, when hearing about the DAB not switching over the Digital and IBOC Radio, I applaud them, I think HD Radio is the worst thing to ever come to the USA. It is a complete waste of time and it costs more money to upgrade but as one of you said earlier, the big networks can afford it, while the smaller guys cannot, and that makes it completely unfair to people like us because of the simple fact there are people that would rather listen to a community broadcast than some big fancy ass network.

And to be in all honesty here, if it were required to upgrade to HD Radio, I would tell the FCC to go fuck themselves literally, because it takes away from the whole point of radio, but from what I'm hearing the FCC is killing radio as well as the big markets like Clear Channel, they are doing it to themselves, and quite frankly, Internet Radio will come out on top over AM, FM, and Satellite Radio, it doesn't matter how you look at it, I know of quite a few stations that get thousands of listeners on a daily basis when there are stations in the listeners market, that they dont care to listen to because of the corporate bullshit in the industry nowadays.

And quite frankly, I even got an email from a woman in Rhode Island, a few months ago that said she would rather listen to my station than some of the stations in the area she lives and works in because of the plain and simple fact, I don't deliver BS, I deliver music, tons of it, with ads that are relevant to her and the rest of my listeners, not these big corporate ads like CBS, and Clear Channel, yes I may play some of those ads when I can find them on YouTube abd dub them, but it is relatively rare that I ever do, because there are other things our listeners care about than TV and political bs, hell I admit, I ran John McCain ads all through the election, I didn't support Obama, and until he can prove me wrong, I never will....

My listeners stayed tuned in because they probably thought the same way i did, and i thank them for tuning in....hell if it weren't for the fact I give my listeners what they wanted when they wanted, I wouldn't have half of them to this day, and to be honest, I'm thankful for every listeners that tunes into my stream....AM, FM, and Satellite, they aren't worried about their listeners counts, they are only worried about one thing, and that is the MONEY. That's all they've ever been worried about....me, yes I want to get into the terrestrial field, but i won't be worried about the money.

I have ranted long enough, but the only reason i ranted like this is because i worked in the terrestrial industry for a short span, and i saw how the Clear Channel pricks work, and they only worry about their paycheck and their egos....I was let go because of money and the fact they moved the station to a different format, different metro and the whole nine yards...

There is only one station I will listen to because at least they dont worry about the money, or so it seems to me....and i listen to my station of course, so all I can say, BURN AM,FM,SATELLITE, BURN!!!!!!!!

Internet is the wave of the future but a lot of the assholes that dont work in this industry haven't figured it out, and even some of the talent i know and respect don't know it either, and that is their downfall
