Help setting up Shoucast/Can I use my website server?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm new here and have had loads of problems setting up Shoutcast. I have tried setting up as my own server but couldn't configure my ports properly. I tried listen2myradio but its not what I am looking for. I want to embed internet radio on my website. I even tried uBroadcast but they have too many glitches, so I am back to Shoutcast in hopes of having more luck. I'm not a pc genius and am need of some assistance. We are a group of ghost hunters and want to have our own internet radio. We have loads of traffic to our site and a pretty big following and interest in listening in on our new station. Unfortunately we cant afford Shoutcast hosting. Can we use the same server we use to host our website (which is donated by 1 of our members)? If so, can anyone help me accomplish this? If not, can someone take me step-by-step to help me configure my pc to serve and embed our internet radio? I would be very grateful in any assistance. Thanks so much!!!!

hmm, thats difficult to say.

Firstly, you would need to check that it's allowed on your hosting, most of the time it's under the 'tos' saying that you cant do this. If not we can continue on.

Secondly, What Operating System is it running? Linux or Windows, we need to know this as there are different SHOUTcast downloads for it.

There is a tutorial for windows OS's some where on this site, ill find it and link you to it, but it might need some modifications.

Also if it's Linux (most likely) then i am working on a tutorial that will be up soon on how to set up a SHOUTcast server.

Please get back to us and we will try to help you more

Lloyd makes some good points. Also you need to consider the bandwidth usage for it. The more listeners you have, the more bandwidth gets used up, especially at higher bitrates. There are free Shoutcast services out there like listen2myradio.com. I have not used them myself, but you can check into them. Also, some Internet stations might be willing to take you on to their roster. These are just some of the things to check into. Ask around, it never hurts to ask!

Good News....I think......My server (run by our friend) said yes we can serve streaming media. I am allocated 20Gb bandwidth at the moment but he can increase it if needed. It is a Windows based server and he has seperate servers for the mail, etc...so it is dedicated for strictly web content. I will start looking through the articles you mentioned and see if I can find any info on setting up the Shoutcast on there. Any pointers or suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much... :)
