Promoting your radio station.

Recommended Posts

Hi All It's been a while.

I thought i would share the struggles of running and promoting an internet radio station. Some people would say radio is dead or at least dying and to some degree I have to agree. So, how do you promote your station and where?

The most basic promotion is word of mouth which I'm sure you all know, tell your friends family and anyone else that might just tune in.

Get submitting your station to directory sites like Tune in, Internet radio, shoutcast, streema, radio guide which can be found simply by searching the web. use social media to the max post in groups like internet radio advertising on Facebook and get your station listed on Google. These are the easiest and most straight forward methods to get you started, but lets be honest this alone with not make your station popular or up there in the top 10 for everyone to see.

So, what next? do you start paying for Facebook promotion ? well that is up to you if you have a nice fat wallet and don't mind spending a fair chunk of cash for minimum results.

Facebook has a very unique algorithm It scans and collects everything posted in the past week by each of your friends, everyone you follow, each group you belong to, and every Facebook page you’ve liked. For the average Facebook user, that’s more than 1,500 posts. If you have several hundred friends, it could be as many as 10,000. Then, according to a closely guarded and constantly shifting formula, Facebook’s news feed algorithm ranks them all, in what it believes to be the precise order of how likely you are to find each post worthwhile. Most users will only ever see the top few hundred. Facebook’s algorithm, I learned, isn’t flawed because of some glitch in the system. It’s flawed because, unlike the perfectly realized, sentient algorithms of our sci fi fever dreams, the intelligence behind Facebook’s software is fundamentally human. Humans decide what data goes into it, what it can do with that data, and what they want to come out the other end.

Basically the better the content, likes, shares and comments will help you rankings. Not such an easy task but a necessary one if you want to go anywhere on facebook. Websites however as it turns out are some what easier to rank within google with a little knowledge of SEO and some high PR back linking you could quite easily find your site up within the top 10 within a few months and it need not cost you a penny.

An idea: If you have a niche radio or content, try to go on the boards/websites/communities/forums where those type of users come to listen. Even sponsor ads/banners and such in magazines or websites dedicated to that certain niche.

If you have a more general audience, try to upload content and mixes on youtube and advertise on such channels where random users can tune in to your radio after listening to your selection.
