Alternatives to radionomy - ad supported shoutcast streaming

Hi all, looking into streaming with SAM Broadcaster. I used to broadcast online many years ago, but found all the licensing regimes rather confusing. I have no problem paying licenses, and understand the sentiment behind supporting the song writers and musicians, But I threw broadcasting in around the mid 2010s when rules and regs where basically changing every fewe months.

 

 

I've just discover radiomony, which hosts your station, on the proviso that they insert ads into your stream, but to what I understand, you don't pay anything toward the costs of the service, however the catch is radiomony takes the ad revenue, and then pays the so call relevant royalties, to so what I believe. This would have suited me fine as I'm not looking to make any money off this.

 

 

Unfortunately just as I came across them, they appear to have shut down on January 1st 2020. Not sure if this was because of some licensing rangles with record labels, or because it was a cost free broadcast platform.

 

 

I'm now looking into doing this as a hobby, rather then doing it professionally as I did many years ago.

For US broadcasters, you are not left with any 'reasonable" royalty licensing options. Since no blanket agreements are in place for us small webcasters, hobby or otherwise, Live365 is about the only option without going direct. Their base plans require 4 minutes of advertising per hour however you can opt out for a 50% increase in the base plan rate.

I know, I was with stream licensing when everything went nuts around late 2015 and 2016; but at the time I wasn't aware of radiomony. If I was, I may have looked into them.

 

 

If you're referring to the Live365 US$59.95 a month plan, this is the one with advertising, and the one without is US$79.95? If so, then this was about the same I paid with stream licensing toward the end.

 

 

Yes, I concur, not really a hobby anymore, it's either go professional all the way to cover the costs, or don't bother.

FYI, If you have any listenership at all, the lowest plan won't work, too many TLH. I am on the $99/mo plan and I peak around 15-20 listeners and avg about 10 almost 24/7 and I push my 3500 hours to the max each month. It took me about 6 months to see the first AD Share Revenue credit of about $40 which I had to 'apply' for and was not automatically paid. They tend to pay out quarterly 90 days after a quarter.

Well, in the end, I may get some disposable paycards, and look into broadcasting anonymously. SoundExchange and ADCAP together with the larger commercial network broadcasters have been extremely selfish. There is being reasonable and there's being outright greedy.
