Independant radio stations, their future?

Recommended Posts

Well.. in aus, we have alot of community stations. Most of them are closing down sadly beacuse they cannot fund it and they dont break any listeners? But.. why? Are more people interested in a fresher sound? More professional look?

Do you think commercial radio is taking over listeners, advertisers? All tehse questions yet i dont havce a clue whats happening?

Lets hear some discussion, i know that im a small fan of independant, i switch over to it when i can. But im not sure what it is about commercial stations and how they take over.. we listen to a commercial station most of the time!

Sorry, my ramblings sort of go off course :P

The big problem with Community stations is theyre just that...Community Stations. Focusing on one small area or one town. Vying for support is difficult as it is. Commercial Stations have the advantage of usually being backed by large media companies. They can get advertising revenue from major corporations or multinationals as well as the mom and pop store on the corner. With monies from the home office to back them up. For them its all about Demographics. If they can show an advertiser the numbers of people, age groups, average household incomes etc...that makes the idea of buying advertising on their stations more attractive.

Lets also not forget the money and promotional stuff they get from the labels! Concert Tickets, car giveaways, lavish contest promotions are the cornerstone of many commercial stations. Lets face it...people WILL tune in for a chance to win something for nothing! Payola is supposed to be illegal and a thing of the past but we all know the labels STILL pay stations to push the music they want to sell! Face it...do you REALLY think there was ever a market for Paris Hiltons album?
